Top Ten ALL TIME Favorite Books Of X Genre

TTFAVDYSTOPIA.png

In no particular order.

Once upon a time I was obsessed with the dystopian sub-genre (as some of these are not only known for their dystopia qualities). I mainly loved it because each new dystopia I read had me questioning things and I feel like that is a good quality to have in a book. I still enjoy a good one whenever I can find it, but I’m not as into the genre as I once was. (With the exception of ongoing series!) These are ten of my all time favorites. 😊

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins (x)

The Hunger Games was my introduction into this genre and was the spark that fueled me needing to get my hands on as many as I could. I can’t even count the number of times I’ve reread the series and I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of it. It will always have a special place in my heart.

Legend by Marie Lu (x)

I picked up Legend almost directly after The Hunger Games and fell in love with it! To this day I still think about the character’s and the ending to the series a lot. I always wished there would have been a tad bit more after the ending.

The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken (x

I’M STILL NOT OVER THIS SERIES! It’s been what, two years since In The Afterlight? I always think about that saying from the book “carpe the hell out of that diem” and then I’ll start missing Liam, Ruby, Chubs, Zu, Vida, and ALL OF THEM. Especially Cole. Cole was my favorite and I’m not over it. I think I need a reread soon. 😭

Inhuman by Kat Falls (x)

It’s been three years since I read this book and there is still not a sequel. THREE YEARS. I loved this book and I’ve been waiting longer than any other book for the sequel and I still don’t even know if there will be one. Which sucks because it ended on the cliffhanger of all cliffhangers. It’s an incredible book though with a really unique idea of a virus that turns people into half animal/half human but they end up adopting more of the animal instincts and it’s extremely contagious so they have a wall built to keep it from spreading. Well, this girl’s father ends up outside of the walls and she goes to find him and well you’ll have to read to find out more… 🙈

Eve by Anna Carey (x)

At first, I didn’t particularly care for this series but it grew on me big time and I fell in love with Caleb and Eve and all of the characters. It has a bit of an odd concept about girls being locked away in schools and taught that men are extremely dangerous. (Which of course the schools turn out to be giant brainwashing places.) It’s a tad cliche and not the strongest of my favorites but I’ll always have a soft spot for it.

The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon (x)

The Bone Season is my favorite and I need The Song Rising now!!! (Do I have to wait until March of next year?) This series is one of those that is more of a mixture between Fantasy and Dystopia. It has qualities of both. It also has an incredible kick ass lead female character, Paige, who happens to be one of my top favorites. It’s about a future world where clairvoyants exist but it’s illegal and punishable to be one. The world is ruled by something call Scion who experiment on, tortures, and sends the clairvoyants away to be enslaved by this race of immortal beings that come from another world. Plus, Samantha Shannon’s writing is incredible and I recommend this series to everyone!

Angel Fall by Susan Ee (x)

This series is about a kickass girl named Penryn who lives in a post-apocalyptic world full of Angels that are not all that “holy” they’re actually evil and want humans exterminated. Okay, that sounds a tad cliche but trust me when I say this series is amazing and you’ll love Penryn. I loved this series a lot.

Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard (x)

While I’ve had my problems with this series and the characters I can’t help the fact that I love it and each book has been a crazy journey. As far as dystopias go this one has always been one that stuck out because I haven’t read another one like it. And for those of you who have read it. Who else is excited for King’s Cage!? After the ending for Glass Sword that books release can’t come soon enough.

Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi (x)

Shatter Me is incredible and I love Tahereh Mafi! This whole series and all of the characters were so unique and is the reason why she is an auto-buy author for me. I’ve heard whisperings about her working on a fourth book for this series. Does anyone know if there’s any truth to that?

Under The Never Sky by Veronica Rossi (x)

Last but not least, Under The Never Sky! Which I feel is an extremely underrated book! I don’t really ever see much talk about it. But it’s a fantastic book and series that I’ve reread a few times. Seriously, if you’ve ever thought of picking up this series I highly recommend it!

Have you read any of the above books? If not, do you want to?

  1. I feel like for the most part your list this week could be mine as well. I haven’t read many dystopian books compared to fantasy but some of these are my all-time favourites.
We’ve already spoke about The Bone Season books a but I feel in previous comment but that is one of my all-time favourite series, I cannot wait for the third book (and then every other book in the series) to be released so I can find out what happens next.
Also I’m the same with The Darkest Minds book, still not over what happened in the last book, and I should really re-read the whole series again soon.
Under the Never Sky and Angelfall are more of my favourite books, ad yet again more I need to re-read as well! I definitely agree that Under the Never Sky is a seriously underrated series!
Great picks for this week! 😀

    • YES TBS! We always end up talking about 😂! I can’t wait for the third one (and the rest of the series) either, I’m so impatient at this point. I’m almost tempted to inquire about an ARC but I feel like they’re being very picky about who they give out physical ARCs to, I don’t think they have that many. But the temptation is there because of how bad I want The Song Rising lol. If we happen to be able to read it at the same time once it’s released we should so try to buddy read it 🙈.

I swear every time I think about The Darkest Mind ending I get sad and happy all at the same time. In The Afterlight broke my heart but I loved how it ended. Though I’ve always had a tiny problem wishing my favorite would have been given more justice.

I’m with you on needing an Under the Never Sky and Angelfall re-read! It’s been forever since I read either of them and they’re both such great series.

      Thank you!! 😊♥

      • We do but that’s because it’s such an amazing series! God the wait for these books is unbearable, I feel at one point I will just be unable to physically wait for one of the books because the cliffhanger will be so intense!
I’m the same actually. I’d love an ARC of The Song Rising but I haven’t quite worked up the courage to contact anyone about it! Still it would be amazing to have one.
Ohh yes we could definitely do that! We’d have each other to obsess with at all the plot twist and turns as well! 😀
God it was an amazing end to the series but at the same time so bittersweet as well. I kind of guess giving everyone a happy ending would be too unbelievable after everything they went through though.
There are so many amazing series I need to re-read, and now I’m on a book buying ban I may actually get around to some of them! 😀
        That’s all right ❤️

      • True! It is and I have a feeling that’s going to be both of us after the fourth book with how Samantha Shannon has talked about. I’m dreading it but I’m also excited because I want to know what is going to happen! I haven’t either but it really would. Yes! We should so plan it and do it as a buddy read then. It would definitely be fun to freak out over it with you while reading! 😃

It really was! It made it unforgettable as well. I usually always remember the bittersweet endings more than the ones that are just happy. That’s true even though I can’t help but wish lol.

Yes! And I actually started limiting myself by making this list on Amazon that only has books on it I plan to read before the year is up so that when it comes to book buying I can try to keep myself from buying anything I’m not reading soon. Hopefully it works out! 😂

  2. The Bone Season is on my TBR. I want to read the series over my winter break or on my flight home at Christmas. And I would really love to have a fourth book in the Shatter Me series. The final book ended so abruptly. I thought I was missing pages or something. I want to know more about the war and what happens after it. There’s still so much more to explore.

    • Yay! I hope whenever you read TBS that you end up enjoying it. It’s such a fantastic book (and series). ♥

Same! Although, after a while I began appreciating the aspect of the ending that meant the characters were still alive. I remember Tahereh asking on twitter once if we knew more Shatter Me books meant characters would die and I was like *puts favorites in protective box* because I love all of them so much 😂. But yeah there really is so much more to explore with the world and possibilities of things that could happen. I’d love if she did publish a fourth book!

  3. I was once obsessed with dystopian, too. But not as much as before. Though I’ve put Darkest Minds and Angelfall on my TBR! I couldn’t finish Shatter Me, but I absolutely love the Hunger Games, Legend (especially this one), and Red Queen (still have to read the second one). But I’ll look into the others (Bone Season sounds especially interesting) and see if I can add to my ever-growing TBR list!

    • Same! The Darkest Minds and Angelfall are both fantastic series as is The Bone Season. Definitely worth reading! If/when you do get around to them I hope you end up enjoying them as much as I did. 😊

I know what you mean about ever-growing TBR lists! At this point I don’t think I’ll ever get around to all of the ones one mine lol.

    • I haven’t yet but I really want to! I’ve heard fantastic things about Red Rising and it’s been on my TBR for so long. It’s one of the series I hope I’m able to get to before the end of the year. 😊

Legend really is an amazing series! I hope you end up enjoying it whenever you do get around to it. ♥

  4. I’ve been meaning to read The Bone Season for aaages – it’s been sitting on my shelf for about a year and somehow I’ve just never picked it up. I also really want to start reading Red Queen and Shatter Me as I’ve heard they’re both excellent series. I actually though about doing dystopian novels for my TTT, but went with fantasy instead. I just couldn’t help myself! 🙂 Here’s a link if you fancy a look: https://coffeeinonehandbookintheother.wordpress.com/2016/09/13/top-ten-tuesdays-top-ten-all-time-favourite-fantasy-books/

    • Oh wow! See I knew her mom had some type of mental illness, but I hadn’t considered what. So, it’s nice to know that. I loved how it was portrayed as well though. If you do ever continue the series one day I hope you enjoy it! I really loved how the author wrapped the series up. I’ll be sure to check out your TTT. 😊

  5. Nice list! Angelfall has been on my TBR since forever! Hopefully I will marathon it in 2017. *fingers crossed* I love love love The Hunger Games and Legend. I am happy to see it on your list. I feel like Legend gets tons of mixed reviews. Just like you, I wanted more ending in Champion. Do you ever wish in a near distant future that Marie Lu surprises us with another book? Have you read the graphic novels to Legend?

    • Thank you!! ♥

I hope you end up enjoying them whenever you do get to them! 😃

YES! THG and Legend are amazing! I feel like it gets a lot of mixed reviews as well and there were aspects I didn’t like but overall it was a great series. I hope so! It would be incredible if she either did another full book or maybe even a little novella. I always wonder what happened after that ending. Open endings like that drive me nuts lol. I haven’t read them yet but I want to! Hopefully I’ll get around to them one day. 😊

  6. Yes! Finally a dystopian list! I debated on doing a dystopian TTT but I went aliens instead, which I mean, some fall into the dystopian category. Anyways, I love so many books on this list~ I’ve read and loved all of them but The Bone Season and Red Queen. I was so not ready for dystopians to die out, so it’s nice to see some people really did love the genre as much as me. I’d be 100% okay if it made a comeback.

    My TTT ft. Aliens.

    Liked by 1 person

    • I actually debated doing an alien one but then realized I only know three series that have aliens so it would have been a bust 😂. But I’m with you! I definitely wouldn’t mind if the genre made a come back. I always keep my eyes pealed for new dystopias just in case I find one that I really like. I’ll be sure to check out your TTT! Especially since I need to find other alien books lol.

      Liked by 1 person

      • Aha, I had to dig pretty deep into my Goodreads to find alien books that I’ve read because I really haven’t read that many. I read a couple new dystopians recently that I liked. I really hope that it doesn’t die out completely now that mainstream ya has moved onto fantasy and retellings. I hope you find some books interesting on it, I really do like the ones I posted.

        Liked by 1 person

      • I hope it doesn’t either! Though I’m a huge fantasy and retellings fan it’d be a shame as the genre has some really great books. I actually love it when a book is a mixture of fantasy and dystopia – which is what TBS is. It makes for an interesting twist and works really well. 😊

Also, I really enjoyed your list!

        Like

      • I have definitely jumped on the fantasy and retellings train, it’s hard not to with all these amazing, new releases. It always surprises me to think how easily mainstream books transitioned for dystopians to fantasy. I also love the mixture too, I think that’s why I’ve been getting into sci-fi as well. The genre lines definitely get blurred and I love it. I’ve never even consider reading The Bone Season, even though I’ve heard a ton of good things about it. I might just have to check it out. Yay, I’m glad you did! 🙂

        Liked by 1 person

      • I need to read more sci-fi – that genre along with mysteries is one I don’t read a lot of but have seen great reviews for books for. I love it when genre lines get blurred too! Well if you do ever pick up TBS I hope you enjoy it. It’s a pretty great series and the writing is fantastic. 😊

        Like

      • oh yeah, mysteries is a genre that I almost never read. which is funny because I love mysteries when it comes to tv shows and movies but I never read them. I heard it takes awhile for new TBS books to come out, so I’m not sure I’m ready to read it. I hate waiting lol

        Liked by 1 person

      • I’m the exact same! I watch way more mysteries than I read. It’s one of those things that I like more onscreen rather than reading. Although, this year I read an incredible one Last Seen Leaving by Caleb Roehrig. It’s a fantastic book and one of my favorite reads so far this year! I think the first two books were the normal year wait but yeah it’s been two years now and The Song Rising doesn’t release until March of next year. I think after that it’s going back to the one year thing. I hope so anyway. I get what you mean though! Waiting for books is torture lol.

  7. I’ve read all except Inhuman, The Bone Season, Under the Never Sky and Eve! I really like Dystopia, and it’s definitely the genre that got me into reading, but now I feel like I read too much of it. XD I no longer find it very unique… But now and again I still find new Dystopian novels I really love.
    Great post! 🙂

    Liked by 1 person

    • I have that exact feeling! It was the genre that actually got me back into reading and after a while it became such a popular genre that it was hard to find something that stood out. But like you, now and again I’ll find a good one. The Bone Season and Under the Never Sky are both incredible and really unique. Eve on the other hand is a book people either really love or really hate – it has a few dystopia cliches in it. Either way, if you ever do consider picking any of those three up I hope you enjoy them. 😊

      Thank you!! ♥

      Like

    • YES! The Darkest Minds is amazing! I love how there’s so many that have read and loved them, though I know it is popular it’s not a series I see talked about a lot. 😊

The Bone Season is fantastic! It’s actually my top favorite on the whole list. I hope you end up enjoying it whenever you do decide to read it. ♥
