10626594It happens at the start of every November: the Scorpio Races. Riders attempt to keep hold of their water horses long enough to make it to the finish line. Some riders live. Others die.

At age nineteen, Sean Kendrick is the returning champion. He is a young man of few words, and if he has any fears, he keeps them buried deep, where no one else can see them.

Puck Connolly is different. She never meant to ride in the Scorpio Races. But fate hasn’t given her much of a chance. So she enters the competition — the first girl ever to do so. She is in no way prepared for what is going to happen.

This book right here is my favorite by Maggie Stiefvater and the first book I ever read by her. The Scorpio Races deals with the myth of the capaill uisce (water horse) and Maggie so masterfully weaves in that myth with the story of the two main characters Sean and Puck, both of whom have lost their parent(s) and have everything riding on winning the races. However, despite the fact that they both have so much to lose they end up forming a bond and are probably two of my favorite characters ever. Especially Puck, she is so unapologetically herself and I admire that. Plus, don’t even getting me started on Maggie Stiefvater’s writing. I love her writing so much! If you’re more of a fan of standalones but also love fantasy then I highly recommend this.
