Sixteen-year-old and not-so-openly gay Simon Spier prefers to save his drama for the school musical. But when an email falls into the wrong hands, his secret is at risk of being thrust into the spotlight. Now Simon is actually being blackmailed: if he doesn’t play wingman for class clown Martin, his sexual identity will become everyone’s business. Worse, the privacy of Blue, the pen name of the boy he’s been emailing, will be compromised.
With some messy dynamics emerging in his once tight-knit group of friends, and his email correspondence with Blue growing more flirtatious every day, Simon’s junior year has suddenly gotten all kinds of complicated. Now, change-averse Simon has to find a way to step out of his comfort zone before he’s pushed out—without alienating his friends, compromising himself, or fumbling a shot at happiness with the most confusing, adorable guy he’s never met.

So, I ended up reading this book in a matter of hours this past week – it was unputdownable. Given how quickly I read it, I also ended up not taking any notes for a full review and just put a quick mini-review on Goodreads. But, of course, I couldn’t not mention it on my blog in some way or the other because I loved it so much!
Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda has so many things I love seeing in the YA contemporaries I read – diversity, a cute romance, family dynamics, and last but not least incredible friendships. I absolutely adored Simon and his family and his friends. Especially his family! I need more contemporaries in my life with great parents and siblings. Also, this book has one of my favorite romance tropes which I’m now calling mysterious love interests who write letters to each other. I’ve only read two, this being the second, and officially need more of them in my life. The romance between Simon and Blue was so cute! I was a fangirling mess by the end. And contrary to what I believed going into this I ended up not finding out who Blue was until right before it was revealed and then I proceeded to facepalm because it was so obvious.
All in all, if you’re looking for a cute, quick, and quirky read with incredible characters and a romance that will make you fangirl then I highly recommend this book!
Also, who else is beyond excited for the movie!? I CAN’T WAIT!
“Why is straight the default? Everyone should have to declare one way or another, and it shouldn’t be this big awkward thing whether you’re straight, gay, bi, or whatever. I’m just saying.”
– Becky Albertalli, Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda

This book was soooo good! Simons friends were just so fun to read about and his family was so awesome. Books are just the best when they can make you laugh! Plus I was totally fangirling over Simon and Blue 🙂

I did not know there was going to be a film! Need to bump on my list 🙂 If you completed this within hours, well I think that says enough. You always choose titles I have yet to get to.. like you are trying to tell me something 😉

Yep! It was such a good book and one of those contemporary reads that I couldn’t put down for anything. And it’s a sign that you should read them! 😂😂 Then again I know how the never ending TBR goes lol. Still I hope you enjoy this one whenever you get around to it, Danielle!! 😁

Amazing choice for this week, Melissa! Simon vs. was such a sweet book, I loved it just as well and I’m eager to see the movie – what do you think of the cast so far? I think Simon’s actor will be pretty good!

Thanks so much, Marie!! 😁 Glad it’s one you loved too. And I love who they’ve cast for the movie so far! They’ve done an amazing job with it. I agree about Simon’s actor, I was really happy when I saw who they picked for him.

Great pick for this week Melissa. Simon Vs. was one of the first contemporary books I reviewed on my blog and one of my all-time favourites as well. This book had everything I loved about contemporary stories; a great family relationship, great friendships throughout, a really sweet really cute relationship between Blue and Simon. This was a quick read but one I very quickly fell in love with.
I did manage to work out who Blue was, but it did take me a while to get there in the end. There were always a couple of options floating around in my mind.
Also I keep forgetting there is a movie coming out for this book! I really need to check out the casting for it because I’m interested to see who’s who and if they match how I see the characters.
Great pick for this week Melissa! 😀 ❤

Simon vs. definitely had everything I love about contemporaries as well. Seriously, it’s probably one of my tops in terms of the family relationships and the friendships. It was exactly the kind of contemporary I needed to get me out of the contemporary slump I was in. And the relationship between Blue and Simon was really cute! Those two had me fangirling because of the cuteness lol. I didn’t figure out who Blue was until right before it was revealed. Who it ended up being was always in the back of my mind as a possibility but then I would think it was someone else and had several others who I thought it was so I brushed the possibility away. Completely facepalming over that fact. 😂
From what I’ve seen of the casting so far they’re going an incredible job! I love who they’ve picked. Especially for Simon. 😁

That’s all right. Yeah Simon Vs was a stand-out contemporary book, one of the best I’ve read and given the amount of contemporary I’ve read and have been reading I feel that’s saying something. It’ll be one I read time and time again if I need to get out of a reading slump. 🙂
I guess not realising who Blue was until right before it was revealed must have made for a fun reading experience, maybe better in that way as well because you discovered along with Simon and tried to guess along with him.
I still need to check it out but if you say the casting is good so far I’ll trust your opinion on that! 😀 ❤

Oh it’s definitely one of the best contemporaries I’ve read too and officially my favorite by this author. I read Upside today and while I enjoyed it it just didn’t top Simon vs for me. Mainly in the friendship department, the friendships were better in this one. I have a feeling this one will be one I reread time and time again too. I actually reread part of it today because I couldn’t help myself. 😂
Yeah, I think it did make for a fun reading experience in the end – finding out who Blue was around the same time Simon did.

Ohh, I still have Upside on my to-read list Hopefully it will end up being a book I get around to this summer as well because even if it’s not as good as Simon Vs it’s still got to be pretty amazing right? 🙂

Definitely, it was still an incredible read. And cute and the main character was so relateable! I have a feeling you’ll love it. 😁

Awww YAY! Glad you’re loving it so far. You’ll have to let me know what you think once you finish it. And I didn’t like Martin at all so I’m with you on bopping him on the head. 😂

I finished it a couple days ago and I absolutely loved it Melissa. I think it’s already one of my favorite YA books of all time. It’s just so freaking cute. And I’d already guessed who Blue was by the midpoint but that didn’t matter. Because the ending was perfect. And I still didn’t like Martin by the end 😂

YAY!! I’m so happy you ended up loving it! It’s definitely one of my all-time favorites too. And probably one of the cutest contemporaries I’ve ever read. I already want to reread it! I swear I’m the only one who didn’t realize who Blue was sooner. 😂 And same about Martin. He was such an unlikable character. Funny enough his brother makes a tiny cameo in The Upside of Unrequited (like a few lines on a page). Which you should so read Upside! It’s pretty cute too. 😁
