Standalone Sunday is a weekly feature created by Megan @ bookslayerReads that spotlights a standalone novel that you loved and would recommend or one that you’re excited to read. Be sure to check out her blog and original post by clicking on the above link! 😊
When Tate Collins meets airline pilot Miles Archer, she knows it isn’t love at first sight. They wouldn’t even go so far as to consider themselves friends. The only thing Tate and Miles have in common is an undeniable mutual attraction. Once their desires are out in the open, they realize they have the perfect set-up. He doesn’t want love, she doesn’t have time for love, so that just leaves the sex. Their arrangement could be surprisingly seamless, as long as Tate can stick to the only two rules Miles has for her.
Never ask about the past.
Don’t expect a future.
They think they can handle it, but realize almost immediately they can’t handle it at all.
Hearts get infiltrated.
Promises get broken.
Rules get shattered.
Love gets ugly.
-Goodreads Synopsis (x)
Much like the last Standalone Sunday I did, I realized this week that I’ve never recommended a Colleen Hoover book. Which needs to be changed because she’s one of my all-time favorite authors. Thus, this week I’ll be recommending Ugly Love.
It’s been a long time since I last read it but, hands down, it’s one of my favorites by her. It’s told in alternating perspectives that also go from past to present as well as from prose to being in a sort of verse form. That may sound confusing but honestly it flowed extremely well and added beautifully onto the story. Ugly Love is a friends with benefits to lovers story that has some minor NA cliches but combined with the heartbreaking message of grief and moving on as well as Colleen Hoover’s incredible writing and characters it was a standout story for me. I remember it being a book that was unputdownable as well as one that I cried so much over. Trust me, if you’re into NA and haven’t checked this one out yet I highly recommend it.
“Sometimes not speaking says more than all the words in the world.”

Have you read Ugly Love? Did you like it? If you participate in Standalone Sunday be sure to link me to your post so I can see it. 😊
OH lovely choice, Melissa! I only read one book by Colleen Hoover, it was the short series Never, Never and I really enjoyed it though I was a little disappointed by the ending that was a bit anticlimatic for me. Have you read it? 🙂
I don’t read too much NA besides that, but I’m really intrigued by that one, especially knowing that it tells a story with past and present moments. I LOVE flashbacks SO much ahah 🙂

Thanks so much, Marie!! 😁 And I did read the first book in the Never, Never series but wasn’t all that into it. I’ve yet to continue with the series especially because I’ve heard time and time again that it has a disappointing ending. I have read and loved all of her other books though. They’re really well written and a bit less graphic than most NA in my opinion. But yes, this one does the whole past and present thing which I love too so that was one of my favorite things. I hope if you ever do decide to read it that you enjoy it as much as I did! 😊♥

Oh I get it – to be honest, if you weren’t that much into the first book, I would definitely not advice you to keep on going with it, you’ll end up even more disappointed ahah 🙂

Oh great pick for this week Melissa, and I’ve had that feeling as well. The wondering why I’ve never featured a favourite author for my Standalone Sunday pick. I’ll be posting one of these in a few weeks for one of my all-time favourite books and seriously the fact that I didn’t get around to it before now it a big shock because it’s an amazing book in my opinion! 😀
Anyways, I haven’t read anything by Colleen Hoover before but I do have a few of her books on my to-read list, mainly because I’ve seen so many good things about her work and her as an author after It Ends With Us was released (I think that’s the right title.) This sounds like an interesting book, and the fact that it’s your favourite by Colleen Hoover is all I need to know to add it to my to-read list! 😀 ❤

Thanks so much, Beth!! 😁♥ That’s exactly how I felt whenever I realized I hadn’t recommended a Colleen Hoover books for this yet. Although, I think I might have avoided it at the time because it’s been so long since I last read one of her books (aside from It Ends With Us) and I didn’t think I would remember enough to do a mini review. And I’m curious to see which book you haven’t recommended yet that’s an all-time favorite of yours. Can’t wait to see it! 😊
You so need to read something by Colleen Hoover! I swear as far as NA goes her’s are some of the most well written that I’ve read. That and most of her books aren’t as graphic in the language or scenes as some NA can get. I will admit that this is her most graphic book but even it isn’t as heavy as it could be. And I actually think she’s releasing a YA contemporary in October so there’s that. I hope that you end up enjoying her books when/if you do read them!! 💕

That’s all right, and yeah it really is a shock isn’t it. If it’s a favourite of yours you think you must have recommended it before, because why wouldn’t you? Still better late than never right? 🙂 It will probably be really obvious when I post it, it felt that way when I realised I hadn’t posted it before you know?
She’s definitely on my to-read list, I haven’t read much NA before but given everyone who’s read and reviewed her books on WordPress have been full of praise I can’t think of a reason not to give her stores a go. Ohh, a YA contemporary from her would be interesting as well.
Thanks Melissa, I hope so too! 😀 ❤

Exactly but yeah better late than never! Plus, there are so many favorite books that it can be hard to keep up with the ones you’ve mentioned versus the ones you haven’t. 😂
She’s definitely one of the best NA writers in my opinion. And it’s great to start with her books as they aren’t as heavy as some NA. But yes a YA contemporary by her is going to be interesting because she’s never written YA before. I can’t wait for it!
You’re welcome, Beth!! 😁💕

I do keep a list of the books I’ve featured for Standalone Sunday/Waiting on Wednesday. It’s the only way I can ensure that I don’t feature the same one twice, but even then it’s still easy to miss one or two off the list.
God I need to get around to her books soon then, you’re pretty much just enforcing everything everyone has already said about how amazing her work is! 🙂
I’d be interested to see what YA contemporary she comes out with and I haven’t read any of her books yet! 😀

I need to do that of Waiting on Wednesday. I swear I nearly featured Lord of Shadows and The Song Rising twice because I kept forgetting I already had. Just goes to show how excited I was for both since I wanted to feature them again. 😂
You should! I’ll definitely be looking forward to your thoughts whenever you do get around to reading one of her books. 😊

I had to double check today because I was trying to come up with a book for my next Standalone Sunday and would have ended up featuring the same one twice if I hadn’t had it written down somewhere. That does go to show how excited you were for them! 😀
In that case I’ll let you know what I think the second I finish one of her books! 😀

Ugh such a good pick! I absolutely love Ugly Love, and anything Colleen Hoover! I adored Tate and Miles though :).

Thanks so much, Amanda!! And same, Ugly Love is such a great book. It was one of the first I read by Colleen Hoover. Tate and Miles are definitely one of my top OTPs. Did you see that little extra story Colleen posted online for them a few weeks back? I loved it so much! 😍

No I didn’t but I need to! Where does she have it written online?

I’m pretty sure it’s on her FB page somewhere. Either the public one or the CoHorts group. Or possibly both. That’s where I read it. 😊

Oh you have a way of finding titles I have been debating on whether to read and then featuring them! Get out of my head haha. This in on my TBR. Good starting point for this author?

It’s a sign that you should read them! 😂 I think it’s a good starting point. I know I read Maybe Someday by her and then this one which got me hooked on her books. Another great one that a lot of people started with is It Ends With Us, her most recent release, which is probably her best book so far. 😊

I am often recommended Ends With Us when I ask where to start haha. But I think starting with the best could possibly set me up for disappointment later? Thoughts..

It could. Although I love all of her books I do think It Ends With Us is next level writing wise and has been way better than the rest. Might be better not to start with that best in this case. 🙈

Ahhh I haven’t read this one yet, but now I’m intrigued! I’ve actually been recommended against Colleen Hoover because apparently her books are full of insta-love… but from what you said, it doesn’t sound like this one will have that at all? Would you say this is more like It Ends With Us (which I liked) or Confess (which I didn’t like)? 😂

I haven’t noticed much insta-love in her books. Possibly, Slammed. I have to admit that one has a bit of an insta-love feel to it. Also, maybe Confess too. I think that one had an insta-love feel to it and also wasn’t one of my favorites. But the rest of her books haven’t felt insta-lovey to me. And this one is definitely not insta-love but does have an insta-attraction thing going on because of the whole friends with benefits aspect. 🙈 I would say it’s somewhere between It Ends With Us and Confess. It’s a million times better than Confess but not everyone would be a fan of it. I loved it and the characters but it’s less serious than It Ends With Us for sure.

I’ve not read anything by Coho yet. I really want to, all her books sound so good (this one included) – hopefully I’ll get to read some of her books soon 😊

You should so give her books a try! I definitely recommend this one, Maybe Someday, and It Ends With Us the most because those three are her best ones in my opinion. I hope if/when you read one of her books that you enjoy it, Michelle!! 😁

Ah I definitely remember being recommended this one a while back. I think Gretchen mentioned it to me! I haven’t read much NA (if you count ACOTAR then I’ve read only read 3 books) so this would be a great entrance into the category. It sounds both sad yet hopeful?? Great pick!

CoHo’s book are definitely a great entrance into the NA genre. Some of the best written NA in my opinion and her’s are some of the first NA I read as well. This one is definitely sad yet hopeful. There are times when it’ll have you laughing and then if you’re a crier like me it’ll make it you cry lol. Thanks so much, Azia!! 😊♥

Ow wow! High praise. Definitely looking forward to reading this one or It Ends With Us. Not much of a crier, but I’ll probably get upset and sulk for a bit if that’s the case LOL. Sounds like a grand time haha XD ❤

I won’t read any of her books after many have pointed out to me the problematic content in them.

I love Ugly Love. I’ve read it so many times now and I still get an urge to pick it up again to read about Miles and Tate. Colleen Hoover is one of my favourite authors, not one for everyone I find as some say she has a-lot of insta love but for me I haven’t noticed that because there is always a developing relationship between her characters over time.

Aww yay! Glad it’s a book you’ve loved too. I’ve read it so many times too. It’s one of her books that I just keep going back to because I love the character so much. I’ve heard about some saying she has insta-love too but haven’t really found it be to be true either. Maybe a little in Slammed and possibly Confess but the rest have been really developed. Also, since you love Ugly Love a lot too… Have you read the bonus scene she posted last month of her FB page for Tate and Miles. It’s so cute!!
