“Arnesians had a dozen ways to say hello, but no word for good-bye.
When it came to parting ways, they sometimes said vas ir, which meant in peace, but more often they chose to say anoshe–until another day.”

Have you ever turned the final page in the last book of a series you’ve loved and then proceeded to burst into tears? Well, that’s the state I’m in after having finished A Conjuring of Light. I’m sitting here wondering what in the world V.E. Schwab has just done to me and how I’m supposed to write a coherent review. I don’t even know if I have the words to describe how much I loved this book! One thing’s for sure, this whole series took me on a magical roller-coaster ride of an adventure that I never wanted to get off of. And can I just say? THAT is how you conclude a series! The ending was perfect.

A Conjuring of Light picks up exactly where the torturous cliffhanger of an ending that was A Gathering of Shadows left off. Kell is trapped in White London, chained and his powers bound by Holland, while Rhy is slowly dying in Red London leaving Lila racing against the clock to get to White London so that she can save them both. Meanwhile, Holland has lost his battle against Osaron’s will and can now only watch as the magic uses his body to travel to Red London to reshape the world as its own. Osaron is a powerful piece of magic that thinks himself a god and will stop at nothing to have a world under his control again. As Red London begins to fall old enemies will become allies in the desperate fight to save the city and take down Osaron once and for all. Whereas the first and second novels in this trilogy slowly built in terms of pacing that wasn’t the case for this one at all. A Conjuring of Light will immediately sweep you away on a fast-paced, magical adventure full of suspense that will leave you unable to put the book down for anything.

“Myths do not happen all at once.
They do not spring forth whole into the world. They form slowly, rolled between the hands of time until their edges smooth, until the saying of the story gives enough weight to the words—to the memories—to keep them rolling on their own.
But all stories start somewhere.”

Something that has consistently been one of my favorite parts of this trilogy is the world building. V.E. Schwab built several incredible, complex worlds within the pages of these books. However, with the final book we’ve got the world down, we’re familiar with it and there isn’t much else to add. Except for a mysterious, magical black market in the middle of the ocean which I found really interesting. That aside, A Conjuring of Light really delved into the magic in a different way. And while we saw a smidge of what dark magic was capable of in the first novel that was nothing compared to how V.E. Schwab highlighted magic without balance in this one. We get to see the consequences of Osaron’s magic on Red London which made for a very horror-esque setting. I loved it and how V.E. Schwab wasn’t afraid to go there.

Then, of course, there are the characters who I’ve grown to love so much and didn’t want to say goodbye to. Hands down, some of the most well developed and memorable characters I’ve ever come across.

Kell has changed so much from the traveller with a smuggling problem we first met in A Darker Shade of Magic. He’s become someone who faces problems head on and has accepted the consequences of his mistakes. We see just how much he loves his family, loves Red London and how much he’s willing to sacrifice to save them. But most of all I loved how he realized that family is more than sharing blood.

“There were too many lives tangled up in hers. Too many people to care about, and once again, she didn’t know whether to stay or to runbut the choice would have to wait, because this city was dying and she wanted to save it. And maybe that was a sign she’d already chosen.”

Lila also changed so much from the thief we first met who just wanted to be a pirate and find adventure at sea. Although this is Lila we’re talking about, she’s still a thief who wants her pirate adventure. She’s also still stubborn and reckless, which I love. However, she finally stops running from the fact that she cares for others and embraces it, embraces the possible hurt it could cause her. I loved seeing her embrace that side of herself. In A Conjuring of Light, much like Kell, she steps up and is willing to do anything to help save Red London.

Also, Kell and Lila. Together. Is it possible that I ship them even more after this book? Yes, yes it is. All of their little moments sent me into a fangirling mess! Especially when they made each other blush.

Then there’s Rhy who I feel had the biggest character development out of them all. When we first met him, he came off as a character who was a mischievous, carefree flirt, however, we learn that underneath that is someone who cares so much for his people and wants to be a strong leader for them. A Conjuring of Light shows him struggling with a lot, possibly more than in A Gathering of Shadows, and it’s through that struggle that he becomes a strong leader. We see him embrace the consequences of the magic keeping him alive, embrace not having magic, and most of all see him realize there’s a strength in both of those things.

“You wanted him to kill for me, die for me, protect me at all costs. Well, Mother, you got your wish. You simply failed to realize that that kind of love, that bond, it goes both ways. I would kill for him, and I would die for him, and I will protect him however I am able.”

Again, I love the sibling relationship between Rhy and Kell. They both care for each other so much. A Conjuring of Light, in particular, showcases them standing up for each other and how much they believe in each other. Plus, there are flashbacks of little Rhy and Kell that I thoroughly enjoyed.

Then there’s my favorite privateer, Alucard, who went through so much in this book that I just wanted to hug him. I can’t say much because I don’t want to give too much away. However, we get a look into his past which I enjoyed. I love how his friendship with Lila grew. Then, of course, him and Rhy. I ship them so much! And I can’t not mention Alucard and Kell’s bickering. They were a big source of amusement for me. I’m pretty sure those two will never get along.

“On vis och,” he told himself.
Dawn to dusk. A phrase that meant two things in his native tongue.
A fresh start. A good end.”

And last but certainly not least, Holland. Throughout this trilogy I’ve been conflicted over him, at times liking him at times not. However, he became a character I loved and cried for in A Conjuring of Light. We get to see his past from when he was young to when the Danes took over. Through this not only do we gain more of an understanding of his character but also we get more of a look into White London. And the dynamic formed between him, Kell, and Lila was interesting to say the least. I enjoyed it.

Beyond those five there were actually a lot of other characters and POVs. I was pleasantly surprised by this and feel it added a lot to the book.

All in all, A Conjuring of Light was the perfect ending to an incredible trilogy. It had just the right amount of conclusiveness to make me happy and then the right amount of openness to leave me wondering. I can officially say that the Shades of Magic books will forever be an all-time favorite and that I’ll definitely be rereading them in the future.

  1. Great review for this book Melissa, I swear we’ve already talked about this one a lot so I almost thought you’d already posted your review and I was mistaken seeing it again! 😀 But seriously great review, and I am so so glad you loved this book and this series as well.
ACOL is a great way to end the Shades of Magic series, the world building I feel was something that was developed a lot in the first and second book which left this one to take the plot and really run with it, like you said we already knew a lot about the different London’s so Schwab could take a step back in a way and not ruin any of the story you know?
The character development was amazing as well, all the characters changed so much from the ones we met in the first book, second when it comes to Alucard, and god they were really put in some heartbreaking situations in this one! Everything that happened to Alucard with his family, especially his sisters, and oh Holland. Every scene we had delving into his past completely broke my heart!
Still this was a beyond perfect ending to the series and I wouldn’t change anything about it!
    Again great review. 🙂 ❤

    • Thanks so much, Beth!! 😁♥ We really have talked about this one a lot already. Mainly because the second I finished it I had to talk to you about it! I was actually supposed to post my review on Thursday but work too over my life this week. All of my posts are late lol.
It really was! ACOL is probably the best ending I’ve ever read for a trilogy. I didn’t feel like it left me wanting anything more. Though, of course, I wouldn’t mind more written in this book world in the future. But, yeah, I completely agree about the world building being mostly in the first and the second book and this one getting more of a plot focus because of that. I love the way she did that because it tied things together nicely. That and it was amazing how she really explored the magic side of things more. I’ve never read a book where the magic was literally made into a character before. I loved it!
Definitely. This series is another one I will hold all fantasy books to when it comes to character development (I swear between Six of Crows, ACOTAR, SOM, and TBS my standards are getting high lol). It was incredible seeing how much they all grew. And everything with Alucard’s family broke my heart completely! Especially his little sister. I was like “WHY SCHWAB!? 😭” during that whole part. And you know my reaction to everything with Holland already. She completely smashed my heart with his backstory and I just wanted to protect him. 😢

      • That’s all right, and yeah I would have been very disappointed if you hadn’t let me know the second you finished this book and your review was the first I was seeing of your thoughts! 😀 Oh I know that feeling, the whole of April has been a pretty so-so month for me.
It was perfect, there was literally nothing more I could have asked from it, although of course I’d love to see more stories from this world again someday as well. 🙂 Oh it really did, there was still a good amount of world building in this book, especially when it came to the magic side of things, but a lot of it was carry over from the first two books.
It’s one I hold all other fantasy books to for pretty much everything. I have no read another series like the Shades of Magic and doubt I will. It’s an incredibly unique story and the character’s are amazing. My standards are high as well, but then with such amazing books having been released what else could we have expected?
I wanted a happy ending for everyone but I guess that was impossible given what was happening in this story. Alucard’s sister’s death was heartbreaking, especially because he worked so hard to save her, and yeah Holland, just everything that happened with and to Holland nearly broke my heart! 😦

      • I definitely wouldn’t have been able to hold in my thoughts until I posted my review. ACOL left me with way too many feelings! Plus, it’s always fun discussing books with you. Especially TBS and SOM. 😁 And same about April. I think a lot of us had so-so months. It was great reading and blogging wise for me but eh otherwise.
It really was! I don’t think I’ve ever been so happy with a book’s ending before. I wish more trilogies/series ended that perfectly to be honest. Definitely and I loved how she did that. Shades of Magic really is more of a slow-burn trilogy and I loved that the first two had the majority of the world building. It just meshed really well with where she went with all of it.
I’ve not read another series like Shades of Magic either. In fact, mostly all of the fantasy I hold other fantasy too I’ve never come across again. Right? The more amazing fantasy novels we come across the higher our standards are going to get. It’s just inevitable at this point lol.
Me too! I always want everyone to have a happy ending. I think that’s why series enders scare me a little. I expect the worst to happen while also hoping everyone gets a happy ending. 🙈 It really was! For a minute I thought she would live but then everything happened on the boat. I honestly can’t believe his brother ended up surviving. But then I didn’t like him. Same about Holland. He broke my heart more than any of them. 😢

      • To be honest I wouldn’t have been able to hold my thoughts in either. The second I saw you were finished with it on GR I would have been messaging you even if you hadn’t messaged me! 😀 Definitely so much fun, it always makes the books better because I love talking about my favourite books, and they’re your favourite books as well so we pretty much constantly gush over them! 😀
April must have been a weird month for so many of us in that case. Not sure why. Definitely definitely agree, I could not have asked for anything more from ACOL (except maybe a happier ending for Holland, would that have been too much to ask for.)
Same here actually, the series I hold in high regard are completely unique, and no matter how much I may try I can never find anything that comes close. I look for The Night Circus the most often and have yet to find anything. But TBH after reading that my expectations were sky high! 😀
I expect the worst to happen, but then again with fantasy a lot of the time the worst does happen. It wouldn’t say it’s paranoia more experience! 😀 I thought that as well. Kind of made it all the more heartbreaking when she didn’t. God I’m not over what happened to Holland, doubt I will be for a while either. 🙂

      • I had a feeling you probably would! And I so would do the same. 😂😂 It really does and I love talking about my favorite books too so it’s awesome that we share a lot of the same favorites and gush over them a lot. 😁
I’m not sure why either. I think April was just that off really busy month.
I couldn’t have either. Though I’m with you on a happier ending for Holland. Not too much to ask! I would have loved a happier ending for him. Like maybe he got to keep a little of his powers or something, you know? And then goes back to White London and suddenly it starts healing or something. I was actually talking to Azia about ACOL and I think it would be amazing if we ever got a spin-off with White London as the main setting after what was hinted at. 😊
Right? With fantasy most of the time the worst does happen. But we do get lucky and sometimes even when the worst happens it gets better. Probably more experience. I don’t think I’ll ever be over what happened to Holland either.

      • Well yeah definitely awesome, the fact that you loved the Shades of Magic series is also a huge plus because that’s one of my favourite series and I’ve loved speaking to you about it.
April was the same for me actually.
I think after what was hinted at we will get a White London spin-off, and I guess after all the work and effort Holland put into that maybe White London healing could be his happy ending. You know it would make him happy to see his home healed once more. 🙂

        Liked by 1 person

      • That’s what I’m thinking too. I mean with how she hinted about White London healing it felt so open compared to the other endings in the book. Gave a lot of potential for a spin-off. Maybe our magic book powers will work and we’ll get one! 😂
I definitely think, in a way, that White London healing was Holland’s happy ending. Or more of a bittersweet ending.
Speaking of magic book powers! You remember how you said you wouldn’t mind more for Daughter of Smoke and Bone? I don’t have the link but I saw an EW article on twitter early that there is going to be a companion novel. My jaw dropped when I saw it! I swear we’re on a roll. 😂🙈

        Liked by 1 person

      • If there is a companion series I reckon it will focus on White London, but if it does it may mean we won’t get glimpses of Kell, Lila or Rhy, given how ACOL ended with Rhy cutting off communication from the other worlds.
Maybe it could be healed in his name of something, that would be nice.
Yeah I saw that as well, I don’t think it’s a new companion novel but a new release of her short story Night of Cake and Puppets. Either way I am so so excited and yeah our book powers are definitely working, we need to capitalize on this Melissa! 😀 ❤

        Liked by 1 person

      • True, I would be sad if we didn’t get a glimpse of Kell, Lila, or Rhy. Who knows? Maybe if there is a White London spin-off it could involve a new Antari as White London is healing and that could reopen communications? Then we would get a glimpse of them. But at the same time I don’t see Kell voluntarily travelling between worlds anymore given that it physically hurts him. Which, ouch, I was sad that that happened to his powers in the end.
I realized that today after I went back and read the article. Sucks that it isn’t a new one but still awesome that she’s publishing a physical copy of that story. We definitely need to capitalize on it! 😂

        Liked by 1 person

      • It’s possible there’ll be a glimpse of them, or their names will be dropped at some point or another, but if the spin-off is White London based I doubt they’ll play a large role in the story.
Yeah that was kind of a kick in the gut, but at least he still had them. Also we don’t know that was permanent, it may be that after a few years his powers are back and safe to use again. Could open up travel between the worlds once more.
Oh yeah, I mean I’m still excited about it and maybe this will open the way for another story. You never know so we should keep our fingers crossed! 😀

        Liked by 1 person

      • That’s what I was thinking too. Possible glimpse or name drops but if a spin-off is White London centric they probably wouldn’t play a huge role. Either way, it would be neat getting to see more of White London or just more of the book world in general. 😊
True, I hadn’t though about the fact that it might not be permanent. I hope it isn’t and that after a few years it settles back down to where he doesn’t struggle with it. And if that did lead to communications between the worlds opening again I can see them leaving Grey London out of it because of the King there. He was getting a bit magic obsessed in a bad way towards the end. Though could open up a path for a new villain. 🙈
It would be awesome if it opened up a way for another story set in the Daughter of Smoke and Bone world! *fingers crossed* 😁

      • I’m not sure if V.E. Schwab would want to go back to those characters, if she thinks their story ended with ACOL and now it’s time for a new story. Set in the same world yes but with different characters and a different threat.
We still have no idea what will happen, so we can honestly imagine anything. In my mind Kell does eventually get his powers back. Not sure what that would mean for communication between worlds but you never know. If the threat is large enough maybe it will open up again. Maybe that would be the Grey London King, maybe someone from White London, who knows? 🙂

        Liked by 1 person

      • True, and also sometimes a stories, characters end is good as is and doesn’t need additional tales. But it would definitely be great to get something else set within the same world for sure. And same, now that you’ve brought up the possibility of his powers returning to normal in my mind that’s what happens too. But I do think if the threat was large enough and communications opened back up again and it involved both Grey London and/or White London then it would end up involving Red London too since it sits between the two. To get to either you have to go through Red London. Which could definitely bring Rhy into the story! I mean who knows? Kell could still be off on his adventure with Lila. There’s so much possibility! 🙈
Oh and guess what? I got my mom to read the Shades of Magic books. She loved them. 😁

      • Oh yeah there are plenty of books I’ve read where I’ve felt that way, but there are plenty more, and for the most part they’re favourite series of mine, where I just always want to see more.
It makes him have a happier ending on top of his happy ending. But who knows what V.E. Schwab will decide if she goes back to Kell and his world again.
I think if the threat is really really bad then Rhy will have to call Kell back. They’re still connected aren’t they so I reckon Kell would know Rhy was in trouble.
Oh that’s great to hear, and yay another fan of the series! 😀

      • Same, definitely more that are all-time favorites where I just never want it to end. I mean some I would even read “boring” novellas about the everyday lives of my favorite characters just because I miss them and the book world. 😂
True, we don’t know what she would decide if she does. I’d actually be a little worried for Kell, Lila, Rhy, and Alucard because Schwab is a ruthless writer. Brilliant but ruthless. 🙈
And yeah I think Rhy most likely would call Kell back if the threat was bad enough. Though hopefully if that were to happen he would be on land rather than at sea because he wouldn’t be able to get their quickly otherwise.

      • Ahh, that’s the sign you just can’t let a book go, and I have so many series like that. One of my favourites is The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer. She has released a fair few companions books so by the time she stops and actually finishes the series I will be going through some heavy withdrawal symptoms.
Well yeah, they survived one finale who knows whether they’ll all survive another one!
Yeah here’s hoping they learn from their mistakes if there’s ever a big enough threat to their lives again! 😀

        Liked by 1 person

      • Yes! A big sign that you can’t let a book go. Which is me with Six of Crows and then as far as ACOTAR goes Feyre/Rhys because I would read everyday life novellas about them any day. (And me one day with TBS for sure lol) 😂 I so need to read The Lunar Chronicles! I think it’s neat that she keeps publishing companions. An author after my own heart! 🙈
Exactly! I would be worried if they would survive a second series. But yes hopefully they learn from their mistakes. 😊

        Liked by 1 person

      • Ha, oh I would love to see everyday novellas for the Six of Crows and ACOTAR characters. Seriously give me a week in the life of all of them now the danger has past and I will read and love it! 😀
The Lunar Chronicles is a great series, another all-time favourite of mine, so I’d highly recommend it. And there are plenty of companion stories too! 😀

  2. Beautiful review, Melissa! I agree that the world building and everything that the author shapes into this book is incredible. She is such a talented author, I will always be impressed by it. Also, I need to read more books by her – did you read any of her other books? 😀

    • Thanks so much, Marie!! 😊♥ She really is. This trilogy was just so incredible. And then even though the ending was perfect part of me didn’t want it to end lol. I haven’t read any of her other books yet but I want to. I’ve been recommend Vicious a lot so I’ll probably try getting around to that one before the year is over. 😊

  3. I am so glad you enjoyed the ending to this one, too! I just finished reading it yesterday evening and, oh boy, that ending broke my heart but also made me so happy (is that possible?). I’m so sad about all the losses (one more than the others, only because he was so sweet), but I loved how each of the characters seemed to grow from these deaths. I loved the subtle romance between Kell and Lila and I really enjoyed Alucard and Rhy together. The bickering between Kell and Emery never ceased to amuse me and I, too, love Alucard and Lila’s friendship. There’s so much character development in this book, especially Rhy who grew into his position as a leader. And I grew even fonder of Holland. It was wonderful to read glimpses of his past. I was sad about how his story ended, but it was fitting. This is how you end a book. Bittersweet but hopeful. Schwab is a genius. This book is definitely my favorite in the series and this series is definitely one of my all-time favorites. Great review, as always! ❤ 😀

    • YES! That is exactly how I felt, it broke my heart but also made me so happy at the same time. It’s probably the first time that I’ve sat there reading a book with tears streaming down my face because I’m so happy but also sad. I was surprised by how much it made me cry but then again I’m an easy crier when I love a book 🙈. I was so sad too! And you’re talking about Hastra right? Or Lenos? Both of their deaths broke my heart. And then Calla! When Lila cried that made that death worse because I never expected to see tough, badass Lila cry. Same about the romance! I swear every scene between Kell and Lila had me fangirling so much lol. Same with Alucard and Rhy (for the most part anyways because they had a few scenes that broke my heart). There really was a lot of character development in this book! I love how it took a big step back from the world building and really focused on the characters and the magic. It made it that much better! And same about Holland. By the end I loved him so much and wanted to protect him more than I did Kell and Rhy in AGOS. His ending was bittersweet but I think he would have wanted it to end that way given what Schwab hinted at in White London. It’s just sad he won’t see it happen. I’m glad you ended up loving it as much as I did, Azia!! Thanks so much! 😁♥

      • It’s not easy to make me cry, but that ending was so touching. One of the best endings I’ve read in a series. And I’m definitely talking about Hastra. Such a sweetie!! So, of course he had to die 😥 He was too good for that world. I was sorry about Lenos, too. And the King. The Queen, too. And yes! Calla. Oh my god, that broke my heart, espcially since it broke Lila’s. The romances in this book were top-notch. They had their issues but they were made the stronger for it. Such great writing and character development. I felt so protective over Holland but his end seemed right. It’s sad he won’t see it happen, but I believe he was the catalyst for it somehow, which makes it all the more fitting. A fantastic read. Glad we enjoyed all three! ❤

        Liked by 1 person

      • Definitely one of the best endings. If only all trilogies could end that perfectly!
And the King and Queen! I didn’t like them in AGOS but with everything in ACOL I started too and then they died. My heart broke more for Rhy than anything in those moments though. I swear ACOL was like *starts liking character* Schwab: Guess what? Me: What? Schwab: *kills character* 😣.
Completely agree about the romances. I love how well written they were. And yep about Holland! Honestly, I wish we could get another book set in the SOM world but with a character from White London after the events of ACOL. To see how White London changed. That would be awesome! 😊

        Liked by 1 person

      • If only lol. But yeah, I didn’t like them in AGOS either but I definitely cared for them by ACOL. More the king than the queen though, I will admit. Poor Rhy. He lost so much by the end. At least he still has his brother whom he loves so much 😔 I swear, people were dropping like flies in ACOL. So many deaths! And that would be AMAZING. I’d love a White London spin-off, just to kind of five that entire world a happy ending, ya know?

        Liked by 1 person

      • For me it was opposite – I cared for the queen more than the king. I really love how having both of their POVs let us see flashbacks of little Rhy and Kell though. Those flashbacks were my favorite! True, at least he still has Kell. And Alucard now too. I was sad that it meant he couldn’t go on that adventure with Kell that he always promised though. 😢 Right? I don’t think I’ve ever seen another author kill so many characters in a book before!
Yes! White London getting a happy ending would be amazing. Here’s to hoping one day she does to a spin-off. I do know there’s a collectors edition of ADSOM releasing in October that has some new short stories in it. I’m really excited for that! 😁

        Liked by 1 person

      • Yeah I really enjoyed those flashbacks. It was a great way to get to know athe royal family even more. Can’t forget about Alucard! I’d love a little short story about them. And I know! It’s so sad he couldn’t go with Kell, but they’ve still got time. I’m hoping for a short story about that, too! Lol.
I was NOT prepared for that many deaths but I guess SOMEBODY had to die 😂 It still kinda hurts.
Ooh I’ll have to get that edition. Maybe it’ll be my first! 😉

      • Me too! I need a Rhy/Alucard short story. Or maybe a whole novella. Yes, a novella would make me happy! And then, of course, I’ll need a Lila/Kell novella too. 🙈
I wasn’t either but yeah I guess somebody had to died. And I mean hey at least it wasn’t Rhy, Alucard, Kell, or Lila. Though poor Rhy did die twice… 😅😂

      • A novella, yes, a perfect solution! I’d love to have those. Yes, at least it wasn’t any of them, thank goodness. Oh he did die twice, didn’t he? LOL, poor Rhy ❤

  4. Ahh, I’m so happy you loved this one Melissa!! How wonderful was it 😍 I’m heartbroken that it’s over, but the ending was so perfect. This book really reminded me why I love these characters and this world so much. I’m definitely still crying over Holland 😂💔 Great review!!!

    • IT WAS SO GOOD! Honestly, weeks later and I’m still feeling all of the feels. I don’t think I’ve ever loved the ending to a trilogy before while also being heartbroken and crying. Very conflicting emotions 😂. One of the best endings ever that’s for sure. I wouldn’t mind more books set in the same world one day only because I already miss the characters and there’s so much potential for more. Same about Holland. Thanks so much, Lauren!! 😊♥

  5. Ahhhh yes!! Reading this review is giving me all the feels on this amazinggg trilogy omg. Such a perfect ending!! There are few times where I’ve loved a series ending as much as this haha.
The world building is so magical!! Omgomgomg I am IN LOVE with Red London and seeing this book delve into the darker aspect of it and change due to Osaron was so cool to read.
My precious characters!!! Kell goes through so much development and same goes for Lila, I never thought it would be possible for me to love them more than I already did?? And Rhy too, agh, my heart broke for him and I love him so much, that scene with him talking to his mother about Kell?? #bromancegoals 😭😍😍 And Alucardddd how precious. The banter is so great between him and other characters? I never thought I’d come to feel so sad over Holland though omg, he got so much more than he deserved poor thing.
    Ahhhh lovely review!!
