20820994Jude and her twin brother, Noah, are incredibly close. At thirteen, isolated Noah draws constantly and is falling in love with the charismatic boy next door, while daredevil Jude cliff-dives and wears red-red lipstick and does the talking for both of them. But three years later, Jude and Noah are barely speaking. Something has happened to wreck the twins in different and dramatic ways . . until Jude meets a cocky, broken, beautiful boy, as well as someone else—an even more unpredictable new force in her life. The early years are Noah’s story to tell. The later years are Jude’s. What the twins don’t realize is that they each have only half the story, and if they could just find their way back to one another, they’d have a chance to remake their world.

This radiant novel from the acclaimed, award-winning author of The Sky Is Everywhere will leave you breathless and teary and laughing—often all at once.

I was going through the previous Standalone Sunday’s I’ve done and realized that while I recommended Jandy’s debut novel I haven’t recommended I’ll Give You The Sun. Well, I think it’s time to fix that.

Even though The Sky is Everywhere is my favorite of the two I absolutely loved this one. Much like her debut novel, I’ll Give You The Sun explores the way in which grief and secrets can affect a family. It’s told through alternating perspectives as well as past and present and through those perspectives we get to see what exactly happened to create a rift between twins Noah and Jude. What I continue to love about Jandy’s novels, especially this one, is how raw they feel in terms of emotions. She has a way with crafting words that really hit you. But don’t let me fool you this book is more than just it’s sad moments because it also has these humorous lighter moments that will make you crack up laughing or even fangirl. Also, like The Sky is Everywhere, we get to see both of these siblings experience first love (and first heartbreak) which, hands down, I believe Jandy Nelson does flawlessly. Plus, I love how I’ll Give You Then Sun has such a family focus. Neither Noah or Jude are perfect, their whole family isn’t perfect but it’s realistic and I loved that fact.

So, if like any of the above things in a contemporary novel then I highly recommend giving this book a read.

“Sometimes you think you know things, know things very deeply, only to realize you don’t know a damn thing.”

  1. I am not big on contemporary reads, but every now and then I do get the itch. I have seen nothing but good remarks for both of these so I will have to make mental note 😉 You certainly make a convincing case. I hope this week is very kind to you!

  2. I have heard amazing things about this book and I’m very happy to see that you loved it! 😀 I haven’t read this book, as I don’t tend to read contemporary that much. Though I will keep this book in mind, sooo I might check it out when I’m in the mood for a contemporary!

    • It really is incredible. Both of the author’s books are. I’m not a huge contemporary reader either but in terms of the ones I’ve read her’s are some of the best. I hope you enjoy it if/when you do read it! 😊♥

    • Yay! I’m glad you’ve read and loved I’ll Give You The Sun as well. It was definitely such a beautiful book with a great message. And I loved the art stuff and alternating POVs as well. It was neat how she did it from past to present with each twin covering a different time.
Of course, glad you enjoyed reading it Anisha!! 😊♥

  6. This is an amazing pick for this week’s Standalone Sunday Melissa. I’m the same as you in that The Sky is Everywhere is my favourite book by Jandy Nelson so far but I’ll Give You the Sun is always amazing. I loved Noah and Jude’s relationship; both when they were younger seeing everything through Noah’s POV but also when they were older and seeing everything through Jude’s POV, and thought this book was wonderfully written. Despite the gap between their ages it never felt like any part of the story was missing did it?
Basically Jandy Nelson is an amazing writer and anything she reads is pretty much guaranteed to be an all-time favourite of mine! 😀

    • Thanks so much, Beth!! 😁
I’ll Give You The Sun really is incredible. And I loved Noah and Jude’s relationship too. I feel like Jandy does sibling relationships so well. Even though with The Sky is Everywhere we only saw one side of the sibling relationship.
It really never felt like any of the story was missing. In fact, I feel that doing Noah’s POV as when they were younger and Jude’s POV as the present was perfect and made everything come full circle seamlessly in the end. It made it better than it would have been if both had been the same age or if there had only been on POV.
Same! Anything Jandy Nelson writes will most likely become an all-time favorite for me too. I can’t wait until she publishes another book! 😊♥

      • That’s all right! 😀 Oh she really does. I love reading family relationships in books and Jandy Nelson has written some of the very best. Even with The Sky is Everywhere I still loved the close relationship you could tell Lennie had with her sister before her death. Exactly, and I think that fact that she managed to write the story like that really shows how talented a writer she is. The fact that she switched POVs and back and forth through time without it feeling too confusing.
I’m keeping an eye out for her next release, I just want more information on it than we currently have! 🙂

      • Same! And I agree about The Sky is Everywhere, even without her sister there you could tell how close they were. I feel like the little poems added wonderfully to that aspect.
It really does! I’m always in awe when an author flawlessly writes multiple POVs because it something I think can either work or not work with no in-between. Especially in contemporaries.
Me too. I could swear I saw something on one of her social media accounts where she said she’s still writing the book that’s supposed to be released this year. I’m thinking it won’t end up being published until next year.

      • The poems were amazing. They really added to the story didn’t they? And pretty much everything about the story emphasized the bond the two sisters had.
Multiple POVs is really hard to do but honestly I think no matter what Jandy Nelson does it’s going to end up well, she’s an incredible author.
I hadn’t even heard anything like that so you’re one step further on the information scale than I am. 🙂 But it’ll be worth the wait, whenever it’s released. 😀

      • They really did! That and they broke my heart at times.
I went searching for information the last time I mentioned them on my blog. I was so curious because all the have is that mini synopsis and a title. It will definitely be worth the wait! And possibly a book I drop everything for once it’s released just because it’s Jandy Nelson. 😊

      • Yeah I’ve seen the title and mini synopsis. I can’t wait to see the cover, and get an extended actual synopsis, which will hopefully be coming soon, maybe? Jandy Nelson is definitely a drop everything author for me too! 😀
