Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly post hosted by Breaking the Spine that spotlights upcoming book releases that you’re eagerly anticipating!
This week I’m spotlighting a fantasy standalone that I’m highly anticipating, The Wood by Chelsea Bobulski. I discovered this while browsing NetGalley last week and was instantly drawn in by the synopsis and the mention of a portal and how kind of dark it all sounds. I’ve not seen much about it but from the reviews on Goodreads so far it definitely seems like one to watch out for. I can’t wait to read it!
Genre: YA, Fantasy
After her father goes missing in the woods that they protect, Winter tries to seek the truth in what happened, why the wood is changing, and what it all has to do with the arrival of a mysterious stranger in this thrilling YA debut.
When Winter’s dad goes missing during his nightly patrol of the wood, it falls to her to patrol the time portals and protect the travelers who slip through them. Winter can’t help but think there’s more to her dad’s disappearance than she’s being told.
She soon finds a young man traveling in the wood named Henry who knows more than he should. He believes if they can work together to find his missing parents, they could discover the truth about Winter’s dad.
The wood is poisoned, changing into something sinister—torturing travelers lost it. Winter must put her trust in Henry in order to find the truth and those they’ve lost.
Bobulski’s eerie debut is filled with friendship, family, and the responsibilities we choose and those we do not.
You can pre-order it on: Amazon, B&N, Book Depository, Google Play and Kobo
What books are you excited for!?

YEP! Time portals. Any time a blurb talks about portals I am immediately interested 😂. No problem, glad I could get you to add it to your TBR. And right? The cover looks amazing and very creepy, I love it!

I didn’t. It only had the little wish option on NetGalley which I clicked so here’s to hoping! 😁

Maybe! They granted mine (for another title) within minutes the other night. So hopefully you will have same luck!

I hope so! I would definitely like to have the chance to read it early. If not then I’ll just have to pick it up once it’s released. 😊

It really does! I love the fact that it sounds like it’s going to be a darker fantasy. Here’s to hoping we both enjoy it whenever we read it. 😁

This sounds good, though the premise and cover might seem a bit dark and creepy. But I do love YA fantasy so yay!

I have to admit it was definitely the creepy cover that made me read the synopsis when I first saw it. 😂 Thanks so much, Marie! I hope so too! 😊

All I had to see in the blurb was the words time portals and I was hooked. I actually froze a little reading the blurb because I was like ‘yes, this is going to be a book I want to read!’ This one sounds amazing Melissa, and I am so glad you decided to feature it for this weeks WoW because if not I don’t know if I would have discovered it otherwise. There aren’t many fantasy standalones out there that are actually good, mainly because I think it’s hard to give the proper development in just one book when so many are split over three books in a trilogy you know, but this one sounds like it could be an exception.
Great pick, I am definitely adding this to my to-read list! 😀 ❤

I had a feeling this would be on you wanted to add to your TBR too. That was my exact reaction when I read the blurb too and saw time portals. I was like *stops reading blurb and adds to TBR* and then I even clicked the wish button on NetGalley and emailed the publisher. 🙈
It really does sound amazing and I’m so glad I could put in on your radar. Here’s to hoping it’s one that we both end up enjoying!
I completely agree about fantasy standalones, I’ve come across so few that are really good. I think that’s why I’ve been actively searching them out this year because I want to find more that are good. The few I’ve come across that are good give me hope that there’s more. But it’s definitely hard to give a fantasy standalone the same development as a series would. Which, given how complex fantasy can be really can be the downfall of a fantasy standalone. I think it takes a really great author to make it work.
Thanks so much, Beth!! 😁♥

Oh yes this one sounds amazing, and I think if you hadn’t featured it I wouldn’t have noticed it maybe because the cover isn’t one that really catches me eye that much you know? And in that case I hope you manage to get an ARC for this one Melissa, if you do once you’ve read it you’ll have to let me know what you thought of it! 😀
I just never seem to manage to find them, but then again I wouldn’t say I’ve been actively looking for them either. Maybe that’s something I should start because there are bound to be some amazing ones out there.
That’s definitely been the downfall of the standalone fantasy books I’ve read, and it’s a shame because they had good concepts as well.
That’s all right! 😀 ❤

I hope so too. I heard back from the publisher the day after I emailed and they redirected me to two forms I had to fill out to request it because it’s through Fierce Reads I guess but I haven’t heard anything back. I’m keeping my fingers crossed though! And if I end getting a copy once I read it I will definitely let you know what I think. 😊
There has to be. I mean thinking about it in terms of genres within fantasy there have been a lot of great magical realism novels published in the last few years. (That I still need to read. lol) 😊

That sounds like a fair bit of work, but here’s hoping it’ll be worth it in the end and you’ll get a copy. Sometimes publishers can take a while to get back to you. I guess the only thing you can do is wait.
Ha, yeah you do need to read some of them. I love magical realism books and there are so many out there I’m sure you’d love Melissa! 😀 ❤

A standalone fantasy book?? Omg, this is the best news I’ve heard all day! There aren’t very many fantasy standalones out there, so this book appeals to me tremendously. I’ll definitely be reading it! Thanks, Melissa!

Yep a fantasy standalone! I don’t come across them very often either. Though I’ve been coming across more this year. Glad I could get you to add it to your TBR. Here’s to hoping we both enjoy it whenever we read it! 😁

Great post Melissa! I almost thought this book is a thriller since the cover has blood dripping haha.. but fantasy standalone, that does sound intriguing 🙂

Thanks so much, Jasmine!! When I first saw the cover I thought it was a thriller too until I read the synopsis. The covers does give those thriller vibes. And it seems to have a bit of a mystery in it along with the fantasy aspects. 😊
