Five Recommendations Based On My Favorite Female Characters

femalecharacterrecpost.png

I’ve had two recommendation posts planned for a while because I wanted to recommend some fantasy and contemporary novels based on my favorite female characters. However, when I realized that today is International Women’s Day I thought what better way to celebrate that than by combining my two post ideas into recommending five of my favorite books by women based on my favorite female characters.

Paige Mahoney – The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon

“That’s what humans do. We make. We remake. We build, we rebuild. And yes, sometimes we paint with blood, and we tear down our own civilizations, and it might never stop. But if we’re ever to unlearn our darker instincts, we have to be free to learn better ones. Take away the chance for us to change, and I promise you, we never will. I’m willing to fight for that chance.”

Paige is probably my top favorite female character. What I love about her is the fact that, unlike a lot of her fellow voyants, she doesn’t view the lower orders as being less than her. She sees them as her equal. And even though she creates a lot of enemies she refuses to let anyone in the syndicate stick their heads in the sand and ignore how terrible the world around them is getting. She’s willing to do anything to not only be the change but to make sure there is a day where being voyant doesn’t equal being a criminal or a death sentence. I just love her stubbornness, determination, and strength. And yeah she can be a bit impulsive or reckless which can cause some problems but I like that about her because she isn’t perfect which makes her realistic. You can check out my review of The Bone Season here.

Feyre – A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas

“No one was my master— but I might be master of everything, if I wished. If I dared.”

Yes, I used a quote from A Court of Mist and Fury instead of the first book. Mainly because I feel like that quote perfectly showcases Feyre as a character. I love what Sarah J. Maas has done with her character. Feyre has this resilience and strength that I really admire. I feel like anything I want to say could be a spoiler for those who haven’t read the books. She’s one of my favorites for the fact that she manages to rise up from the ashes so to speak. Everything that happened still affects her but she’s able to find the strength in herself through that. You can check out my review for A Court of Thorns and Roses here.

Inej Ghafa & Nina Zenik – Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo

Inejghafaf25460c911bef0cd326cec0b48f31db7

“Inej placed her hands on Nina’s shoulders. “We’ll see each other again.”
“Of course we will. You’ve saved my life. I’ve saved yours.”
“I think you’re ahead on that count.”
“No, I don’t mean in the big ways.” Nina’s eyes took them all in. “I mean the little rescues. Laughing at my jokes. Forgiving me when I was foolish. Never trying to make me feel small. It doesn’t matter if it’s next month, or next year, or ten years from now, those will be the things I remember when I see you again.”

These two right here, I love them. This is more than just recommending one of my favorite books through my favorite female characters but also through my favorite female friendship. Inej is someone who has been through a lot of terrible things in her life and yet she retains this hopeful outlook and this determination to one day make it so that no one else goes through what she went through. Nina is someone who is so outspoken and straightforward, she’s not afraid to speak her mind and I loved that about her. As Inej is more reserved than Nina I feel like the differences in their personalities is what made their friendship so great. You can check out my review for Six of Crows here.

Sky – I’ll Meet You There by Heather Demetrios

“It occurred to me that we were the same, in a way. Both of us treading water, pushing against forces we couldn’t control.”

I’m pretty sure I recommend this book as much as I do The Bone Season. It’s just that it really is a fantastic book. Sky is one of my top favorite female characters as far as contemporaries go. She doesn’t have an easy life nor does she have a great relationship with her mother and throughout I’ll Meet You There a lot of uncertainty about her future creeps into her life. What I love most about her character is how much she cared for everyone, even her mother who wasn’t the best person. She feels like she has to take care of everyone and everything even at the expense of her future. And she starts to learn that sometimes it’s okay to put yourself first. The journey she goes through in this book is beautiful. You can check out my mini review for I’ll Meet You There here.

Lily Bloom – It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover

“I think about how sometimes, no matter how convinced you are that your life will turn out a certain way, all that certainty can be washed away with a simple change in tide.”

I’m going to say this before anything else, this book explores abusive relationships. Just a warning to anyone who isn’t comfortable with reading a book that explores that topic. That aside, It Ends With Us is one of the most powerful books I’ve ever read. It changed my outlook on a lot of things. I’ve read a lot of NA and out of every one that I’ve ever read Lily remains my top favorite female. What she goes through as a child and then as an adult only to come out of it with this strength and determination to break the cycle was incredible. The journey in this book is one that I’ve never experienced but Lily was such a realistic character and I admired her for the strength she had. You can check out my review for It Ends With Us here.

Have you read any of the books I recommended? Are they on your TBR? What are some of your favorite female authors or characters?

  1. These are some great recommendations Melissa, I’ve only read the first three picks but I have both I’ll Meet You There and It Ends With Us on my to-read list so hopefully I’ll be able to get around to both soon.
I love Paige, and The Bone Season. I think I remember you saying in your review for TSR that all the positions in power in that world are held by women and I think that’s an incredible thing to see in any book really, but hopefully one day it be more common than it is now.
I love Feyre as well, her development through the two books released so far has been amazing and I really can’t wait to see where she goes in the next one. She struggles at the beginning of ACOMAF but I think it just makes her stronger in the end.
And I definitely love both Inej and Nina, both as separate characters and friends as well. We need more characters like all the ones you mentioned in YA books but I guess this is a good start.
Great post Melissa, also Happy International Women’s Day! 😀 ❤

    • Thanks so much, Beth!! 💕 You definitely need to read I’ll Meet You There and It Ends With Us. Both are such great books and whenever you do get to them I hope you end up enjoying them. 😊
Yep! I talked about that in my review. I actually hadn’t even noticed it until The Song Rising and I love the fact that Samantha Shannon has made most of the powerful characters in the series females. It really is incredible and I hope that one day it is more common. We can always use books full of great kickass females, be them villains or heroines.
It really has been and I can’t what to see where she goes next either. I’ve been seeing little teasers for ACOWAR on SJM’s Instagram and it’s making me really excited. But yeah, I completely agree. Her struggles in ACOMAF made her stronger in the end. And I love that about her character.
Same about Inej and Nina. I know I say it a lot but I so need more Six of Crows books. I miss them!
We definitely do. I feel like more and more we’re seeing great female characters pop up in YA. Which is a great thing.
Thanks so much again Beth and Happy (late) International Women’s Day to you too!! 😁♥

      • I’m sure I will. I’ve seen plenty of amazing reviews for both so I have high expectations already but I’m sure they’ll both be amazing! 😀
I didn’t even realise until you mentioned it in your review but yeah looking back. It seems like the majority of major players, even not the leaders but more side characters like Vance, are women and I think that’s just wonderful to see.
Ohh I’ll definitely have to check out her Instagram then. It’s not too much longer to go if you think about it! So excited for this book it’s almost unreal!
I’m hoping we get another Six of Crows book, I definitely think there is potential there with Nina’s story still left kind of open.
It’s always wonderful seeing well-written female characters in YA books.
And hey, every day should be women’s day I think! 😀 ❤

      • It really is and honestly I can’t wait to see what other great female characters she brings in the series as it goes on because given the pattern so far there is bound to be more.
Right? There’s only around two months I think. I can’t wait until I have it in my hands and I can read it!
Definitely. And until then I’ll just be happy waiting for the Grisha storybook she’s releasing this year.
Very true! Every day should definitely be women’s day! 😁

      • Well we’re going to be going to a whole new country in TBS4 so that’s plenty of opportunity to bring in some more amazing female characters in leadership positions.
It feels so close but still so far away.
Yes, very very excited for that. They seem to have a pre-order link on Amazon US but not UK at the moment. Gotta wait a little long I guess.

        Liked by 1 person

      • True! I can’t wait. Between that and all of the new world building I just really need TBS4.
They do? I’ll have to pre-order it soon. That sucks that there isn’t one on Amazon UK yet. Hopefully they do soon though! 😊

  2. INEJ AND NINA. ❤ They're two of my favorite characters as well, so I'm so glad to see them on your post! Thanks for sharing and, as always, fabulous choices! ❤

  3. I KNEW THE BONE SEASON WAS GOING TO FEATURE, HAHA. I haven’t read it yet but I was like yuuup and there it is. 😛

Anyway, 100% with you re: Lily and Sky. Both are such strong characters, and I love what their respective books have done with them. They grew so much (in different ways, obviously), and their journeys are inspiring to read about. ❤

    • I’m so predictable! 😂😂 I have no shame though because I’m a total TBS book pusher. I just want everyone to read it! 🙈
They really are. And I agree both of their journeys are so inspiring. I actually ended up rereading part of I’ll Meet You There and am thinking I might need a reread of It Ends With Us sometime soon.
By the way! Guess what book series I started last night? ADSOM!! I am loving it so far. Seriously questioning why I didn’t read it sooner right now.

      Like

      • Totally understandable! I’m the same way with ADSOM (as you know).

I might do a reread of It Ends With Us too, eventually. That book has laaayers. Have you read CoHo’s other works? I’ve read Confess and it’s not as good for me. :/

AND YEEEES, so happy to hear that! Will you be writing a review for it?

        Liked by 1 person

      • Yep, I’ve read all of her books with the exception of Never Never because I couldn’t get into them. I have to agree that Confess wasn’t her best especially given how incredible It Ends With Us is. I would definitely recommend Ugly Love, Hopeless, Slammed, and Maybe Someday if you do want to give a few of her other books a try. Maybe Someday is my favorite aside from It Ends With Us. 😊
Yeah, I’ll most likely be writing a review for it. Or I’m going to try at least. I’ve been in a review slump but I want to get one out there for ADSOM because I’m loving it and want to talk to you and Beth about it once I finish it.

      • I’m keen to get into Maybe Someday! I think what bugs me about her books is that all the relationships seem very insta-lovey and her male protagonists always sound very alpha-maley (that’s not a word but whatever). Do you find that to be the case?

YES PLEASE. I’m so excited omg. Are you going to jump into AGOS straight after?

        Liked by 1 person

      • Yeah, some of them have been a bit insta-lovey (one of those exceptions for me since I usually don’t like insta-love). I feel like a lot of NA tumbles into the insta-love trap 😂. Out of all of her books so far Maybe Someday, Hopeless, and November 9 have felt the least insta-lovey for me. And I haven’t noticed much on the alpha-male thing. But then it’s been a while since I last read her books. I would definitely say Miles from Ugly Love has that whole alpha-male vibe. Ridge from Maybe Someday didn’t though. Neither did the male protagonist for Slammed. I can’t remember much about the rest beyond It Ends With Us.
Probably not straight after I finish ADSOM because one of my most anticipated releases is out on Monday but as soon as I finish that I’m jumping into AGOS. 😁

      • Ooh, thanks for the explanation! Maybe I’ll check Maybe Someday first – I heard that one has got good rep, and it looks less angsty than the others. I’m in no mood for angst at the moment! 😂

Ooh, what’s that anticipated release? Regardless, enjoy them both!

        Liked by 1 person

      • Maybe Someday definitely has great rep. And yeah I would say it’s a bit less angsty than the others but it does have some angsty parts. I wouldn’t say they’re over the top though but rather they fit what it covers.
The Struggle by Jennifer L. Armentrout. It’s the third book in her Titans series and I can’t wait! 😁

  4. This is such a great post, Melissa, thank you for sharing this! I haven’t read Six of Crows (I know….) but I already LOVE these two characters you mentioned just because of this quote ahah ❤ I really want to read I'll Meet You There soon, it's on my TBR because of you 😀

    Liked by 1 person

    • Thanks so much, Marie!! 💕 Ahhh you so need to read Six of Crows. The characters in general, beyond the two I mention, are so memorable. But yes Inej and Nina are the best! And awwww I’m glad I could get you to put I’ll Meet You There on your TBR. I hope you end up enjoying it when you do read it! 😁♥

  5. Lovely recommendations post, Melissa 💖
I haven’t read any of these books 🙈 But Six of Crows is definitely on my TBR and I’ve heard that it features some kickass female character, so I’m excited for that! I really love Hermione, she taught me that it’s okay to be clever even if you get teased about it 💖 And I also love Ginny, I thought she was real bad ass in the books, she didn’t need a man to fight her battles for her.

    • Thanks so much, Michelle!! 💕
I can’t recommend Six of Crows enough and it definitely features some kickass female characters. I hope you enjoy it whenever you do get to reading it. 😁
And I was so going to rec HP through Hermione, Ginny, and Luna but ended up forgetting until after I had posted it. Hermione and Ginny are two of my favorites as well for those exact reason. I also love Luna just because she was completely herself without worrying what anyone else thought. 😊

  6. Amazing recommendations! 😀 I ADORE Nina and Inej!! They are both some of my all time favourite characters! ❤ ❤ Soooo happy to see them in your recommendation!

  7. I love this post so much!! Girl power, yes please. 💞 I ADORE Inej and Nina, apart from being such strong individuals, together they are unstoppable and have such a beautiful fromance. 😉❤ Feyre is definitely a strong character as well! She went through so much and is still willing to get back up and keep going. I haven’t read The Bone Season, I’ll Meet You There or It Ends With Us, but they’re on my TBR and I can’t wait to read them, now especially after your recs! ❤ Again, great post Melissa!

    • Thanks so much, Analee!! 😁
Right? We could always use a dose of girl power in our books.
Me too. Inej and Nina’s fromances will forever and always be my favorite. I need future Six of Crows spinoffs with the two of them!
Definitely. What I love about Feyre is how when things get bad she doesn’t pretend to be okay but then gets back up and is stronger because of it.
Ahhh you so have to read those three! I hope if/when you did that you enjoy them as much as I did. 💕😊

      Liked by 1 person

    • Same!! They’re both such incredible characters. I actually need more Six of Crows books just for the two of them because I miss them and their friendship.
And you should so read CK! Whenever you do read it though I hope you enjoy it. 💕😊

  8. This post is up! Hahahaha and there you go with I’ll Meet You There again 😂😂😂 ahem, okay. I looooove Inej and Nina SO MUCH they had to make the list! Their strong on their own but together, it’s one of the best female friendship I’ve ever read about. Sky is…. well, amazing. I love her character so much but you already know it hahaha also Feyre. I admire her strength and all the things she’s overcome. I also love Mor though, and I can’t wait to understand more about her and to see more of her relationship with Az hahaha 😛

    Liked by 1 person

    • I told you it would be my turn next 😂😂😂. I can never recommend it too many times! It’s too amazing to not recommend lol.
And yes! Inej and Nina are actually the favorites out of all the ones I recommend. Not that I’m surmised because they’re both amazing.
I so wanted to add Mor to this but then I thought I might spoil something for anyone who hasn’t read ACOTAR or ACOMAF yet so I held off. But she is one of my favorites in that series too. I definitely can’t wait to learn more about her either and see more of her with Az. I swear if those two don’t end up together by the end of ACOWAR I’ll be both mad and sad. 🙈

      Liked by 1 person

      • Ahhh I see what you meant! But I think only mentioning the name and where she’s from is okay, though maybe you wouldn’t be able to describe why she’s on your list without spoiling hahaha completely unrelated but I love ACOWAR cover! I think it’s the ebst out of 3 because let’s be honest, I think the other two have ugly colors 🙈🙈🙈

        Liked by 1 person

      • Yeah, I wouldn’t have been able to describe her without giving her story away. I had such a tough time describing Feyre because I’ve read ACOMAF a million times and ACOTAR only once. 😂😂
But yes! The ACOWAR cover is gorgeous! I agree about it being the best of the three. 😊

        Liked by 1 person

  9. Ah I love this post! I’ve read 2 of the five books listed (Six of Crows and ACOMAF) but the other ones definitely seem like books I should check out sometime soon! I love how you mentioned Nina and Inej’s friendship! It is certainly one of the strongest portrayals of female friendships I’ve seen in YA so far 🙂 They’re differing personalities certainly complement one another. And Feyre is always a wonderful choice. She really came into her own in ACOMAF. And that quote is one of my favorites among many within that fantastic book haha. I really like the quote from Bone Season, too! Paige seems like a real winner. Gotta bump that one up the list. Thanks for this post, Melissa! 😀

    • Thanks so much, Azia!! 😁
I definitely couldn’t mention Inej and Nina without mentioning their friendship. It’s just so amazing and I agree it’s one of the strongest female friendship portrayals I’ve seen in YA too. We need more friendships like theirs in YA!
She really did. I love how much Feyre grew in ACOMAF and I can’t wait to see what else is in store for her character development in ACOWAR (here’s to hoping SJM doesn’t break our hearts).
And you so have to read TBS! It’s such a great book series and Paige is definitely incredible. No problem, it was a fun post to write. 💕😊

      Liked by 1 person

      • We definitely do need more F/F friendships like theirs!
And you know she’s gonna break our hearts, but hopefully she ends the trilogy really well regardless 😉
I’ll put it in my cart! LOL

        Liked by 1 person

      • I’m so not prepared for my heart to be broken. But I mean as long and Rhys, Feyre, Mor, Az, Cassian, Amren, and Feyre’s sisters are alive in the end I’ll be happy. Is it too much to hope she won’t kill any of them? lol

        Liked by 1 person

      • LOL, unfortunately, I think it is. My money’s on one of Rhy’s inner circle. And MAYBE one of Feyre’s sisters. I’m just trying to prepare myself for heartbreak at this point *laugh cries*

        Liked by 1 person

      • Nooooooo! Shhhh *hides the inner circle and Feyre’s sisters in protective box* I’ll just be sitting here in denial over the possibility. 😣😂
I try to prepare myself for the heartbreak and it never works. Although, I think Cass is getting a novella so maybe he’s safe.

        Liked by 1 person

      • 😂😂 Don’t worry. You’re not the only one. He is?! Yay! I’ll definitely have to read that. Hopefully Maas will leave him alone and go after someone else, preferably no one in the Inner Circle. Fingers crossed!

  10. Great post Melissa! I do love Injej. I have a love hate relationship with Feyre in book 1. I have yet to read ACOMF yet but I might like her more in there since I love that quote you choose 🙂 This year I will have to make time for some Colleen Hoover. I know her books were popular among bloggers last year.
