This is a bit late as I’ve been busy over the past few days but… Happy New Year! I hope you guys are having a great start to the year. Can you believe how fast last year flew by? Anyway! I wracked my brain for a while over how exactly I would do a 2016 bookish wrap-up but couldn’t come up with anything. Someone pointed me in the direction of this and I thought it was perfect.
The End Of The Year Book Survey was created by Jamie @ The Perpetual Page-Turner. If you want to do the post too you can check out the above link. ♥
Number Of Books You Read: 67 (over 100 with re-reads)
Number of Re-Reads: 40+ (I honestly lost count)
Genre You Read The Most From: Fantasy
I’m calling 2016 the year of re-reads because I nearly re-read as much as I read. That’s one thing that I’m going to try not to do in 2017. I want to get through all of the books I own and haven’t read along with whatever releases I’ve missed and some new releases.
*each cover links to my review or goodreads
Best Book(s) You Read In 2016?
Top of the top goes to….
Honorable Mentions
Book You Were Excited About & Thought You Were Going To Love More But Didn’t?
This is the perfect description for how I felt about Crooked Kingdom. I loved it, of course, but I expected to love it more than I did. It was a great ending but I wanted more, I guess. I talked about the various reasons why it didn’t completely live up to my expectations in my review. It’s a spoiler review, though, so be warned.
Most surprising (in a good way or bad way) book you read?
At the beginning of 2016, before I started blogging, I went through a minor NA military romance obsession. I actually think there are a few books I didn’t even mark for my challenge but I don’t remember the titles now, oops. Anyway! Out of all of the ones I read these two were my favorite and surprised me in the best way possible. I didn’t expect to love them as much as I did and I have since re-read them several times.
Book You “Pushed” The Most People To Read (And They Did)?
It’s no secret that I’m a huge Bone Season fan. It’s one of my top favorite series and I take any chance I can get to recommend it to someone. I don’t know if anyone has actually read them because of me, yet. However, I did convince Reg @ She Latitude to buy them when they were on sale through Book Depository after I raved about them to her. 😂
Best series you started in 2016? Best Sequel of 2016? Best Series Ender of 2016?
In order from best series to best sequel to best series ender. For this, I went for a series where the world was completely new to me and one that isn’t finished yet. As for best series ender, I adored The Winner’s Kiss. That ending was perfect and put me in a small reading slump.
I’m trying not to repeat answers but let’s see how many times I mention Six of Crows or ACOMAF. 🙈
Favorite new author(s) you discovered in 2016?
- Sarah J. Maas
- Ransom Riggs
- Caleb Roehrig
- Kasie West
- A.G. Howard
I can’t pick just one favorite. 🙈
Best book from a genre you don’t typically read/was out of your comfort zone?
Before I started blogging I steered well clear of mystery/thriller books. They definitely were not my thing but blogging and this book have given me an interest in them. I added so many to my TBR in 2016 and plan to try to get around to a few this year.
Most action-packed/thrilling/unputdownable book of the year?
Book(s) You Read In 2016 That You Are Most Likely To Re-Read Next Year?
Favorite cover of a book you read in 2016?
Most memorable character(s) of 2016?
- Rhysand, A Court of Mist and Fury
- Azriel, A Court of Mist and Fury
- Everyone from Six of Crows, especially Inej.
- Julian, Lady Midnight
- Ty, Lady Midnight
- Blake Crawford, Smut
I probably have even more memorable characters than that but I think I’ll stop there.
Most beautifully written book read in 2016?
One of the main things I loved about The Winner’s trilogy was Marie Rutkoski’s writing. She just has a way with words and the writing was the strongest point of this trilogy and why I will definitely be reading anything else she writes.
Most Thought-Provoking/ Life-Changing Book of 2016?
This book was so powerful, for me. It literally changed everything I thought I knew about myself in regards to the subject matter. I go into detail about it in this discussion that I did. Except it’s full of spoilers.
Book you can’t believe you waited UNTIL 2016 to finally read?
I had this series on my TBR for years and then finally decided to pick them up at the beginning of 2016. Ever since I’ve been asking myself why I waited so long because I really enjoyed the series. They’re the reason why I need more faerie books in my life.
Favorite Passage/Quote From A Book You Read In 2016?
“To the people who look at the stars and wish.”
“To the stars who listen – and the dreams that are answered.”
– A Court of Mist and Fury.
Book That Shocked You The Most?
Last Seen Leaving had so many twists and turns and every time I thought I knew what was happening I didn’t. There were a lot of times where I either gasped out loud or my jaw dropped. I loved it!
OTP OF THE YEAR (you will go down with this ship!)
RHYS AND FEYRE!!!! 😂🙈
Favorite Non-Romantic Relationship Of The Year?
From Six of Crows to Crooked Kingdom the friendship between these characters evolved so much and I loved it. They’re my favorite group of characters ever.
Favorite Book(s) You Read in 2016 From An Author You’ve Read Previously?
Best Book(s) You Read In 2016 That You Read Based SOLELY On A Recommendation From Somebody Else/Peer Pressure?
I was actually recommended all of Kasie West’s books by Beth @ Reading Every Night and Jill @ Rant and Rave About Books and after reading both of their reviews for P.S. I Like You I decided to pick up that one first and absolutely adored it. I’m definitely going to be reading the rest of her books this year. As for Sweet Evil, back when I first started blogging I had a conversation with Gretchen @ ChicNerdReads about angel books and she recommended Sweet Evil to me. I’m so glad she did and that I read them because oh my god that series. It’s so good and I’m still not over it.
Newest fictional crush from a book you read in 2016?
- Rhysand, A Court of Mist and Fury
- Kaz, Six of Crows
- Blake Crawford, Smut
Best 2016 debut(s) you read?
Best Worldbuilding/Most Vivid Setting You Read This Year?
Book That Put A Smile On Your Face/Was The Most FUN To Read?
Hands down, Smut by Karina Halle. This book made me laugh and swoon and it was just an all around great read. It also pulled me out of a little slump.
Book(s) That Made You Cry Or Nearly Cry in 2016?
I’m an easy crier when it comes to books, I cry at the happy and I cry at the sad. So, these two are books that wrenched my heart out and had me sobbing like a baby.
Hidden Gem Of The Year?
I don’t think I’ve mentioned this one yet on my blog, aside from this post, but it wasn’t the typical kind of NA or even contemporary I read. I wasn’t sure if I would like it going into it and I’m still iffy on certain parts but overall I really enjoyed it. I might even feature it on a Standalone Sunday in the future and go into more detail.
Most Unique Book You Read In 2016?
I can’t go into too much detail since it isn’t released yet but not only is this unique because it’s the only Phantom of Opera retelling I’ve ever read but it’s also unique because some of the mythology it uses I haven’t seen in another YA Fantasy before.
Book That Made You The Most Mad (doesn’t necessarily mean you didn’t like it)?
Overall I ended up enjoy this book once I got to the end but there was one thing that made me so mad that I nearly DNFed it.
New favorite book blog(s) you discovered in 2016?
This is probably going to turn into more of a shoutout to the bloggers I’m glad I met on here in 2016 since I only started blogging back in March. I really hope I don’t leave anyone out.
Before I start I just want to say thank you to all of these bloggers because they made me feel so welcomed. When I first started blogging I really struggled with interacting and some of them were the first people I talked to on here and it helped me to break out of my shell so to speak. So, thank you guys! ♥

Favorite review that you wrote in 2016?
Best discussion/non-review post you had on your blog?
Best event that you participated in (author signings, festivals, virtual events, memes, etc.)?
I went to my very first author signing, Colleen Hoover, back in August. It was so much fun! I wrote about it here.
Best moment of bookish/blogging life in 2016?
So far, my best moment was being approved for an eARC of The Song Rising. I wasn’t expecting it and was pretty sure I would get declined so when I got the approval email I ran to my mom screaming. 😂
Most challenging thing about blogging or your reading life this year?
Finding the time to reply to comments, write posts, blog hop, and read all while trying to keep up with work and school. It’s been something I’ve really struggled with, especially these past few months.
Most Popular Post This Year On Your Blog (whether it be by comments or views)?
Best bookish discovery (book related sites, book stores, etc.)?
Book candles! I have a minor(major) candle obsession so you can imagine my reaction when I discovered candles made to smell like things from books. I have a growing collection of them now.
Did you complete any reading challenges or goals that you had set for yourself at the beginning of this year?
I sadly didn’t. My original GoodReads goal was 100 books as I read 126 in 2014 (How?) but then things got busy so I kept lowering until, on New Year’s Eve, I decided to just set it to amount that I had already read so that it would be easier to get back to.
One Book You Didn’t Get To In 2016 But Will Be Your Number 1 Priority in 2017?
All of the books in the Shades of Magic books are on the top of my reading list for 2017. I’ve been recommended them so many times and I want to know what all of the hype is about. As soon as I finish review books and the last book is released I’m planning a binge read.
Book (s) You Are Most Anticipating For 2017 (non-debut)?
These are definitely not the only ones I’m anticipating. They’re just the ones I could think of off the top of my head. 🙈
2017 Debut You Are Most Anticipating?
Series Ending/A Sequel You Are Most Anticipating in 2017?
I’m not sure if any of the current series I’m reading are ending this year. However, these two books that are in a series are two that I’m really looking forward to.
One Thing You Hope To Accomplish Or Do In Your Reading/Blogging Life In 2017?
I hope to find some balance and organization. These past few months have been hard on me because real life has gotten busy and I sort of lost my reading and blogging grove. I just really need to learn to balance blogging, reading, and other responsibilities.
A 2017 Release You’ve Already Read & Recommend To Everyone?
As it’s the only 2017 release I’ve read…
If you made it to the end of this long 2016 wrap-up of sorts then you’re awesome because it took so long to put together. 😂
What about you guys? What were your favorite books of 2016? What are some books you’re looking forward to in 2017?
I love the CoHo and Kasie West books! You can’t go wrong with those two authors. I’m reading Our Chemical Hearts now and anticipating the Sarah Dessen and Kasie West books too!
Happy New Year!!

I know right? They’re both such fantastic authors and I’ve yet to be disappointed in any of CoHo’s books. We’ll see about Kasie West since I’ve only read one so far. I have high hopes though! Ahhh I hope you’re enjoying Our Chemical Hearts. Happy New Year to you too! 😊

Happy New Year!! ❤ I hope you have a wonderful one! 🙂
Six of Crow is definitely my favourite book of the year as well!! It was simply fantastic and nothing else could live up to it. Sooo I'm very happy to see it as your favourite!
All of the Shades of Magic books are on top of my TBR as well – actually I just started A Darker Shade of Magic yesterday. So I'm doing good on that front!! Hope you get around to it soon, I can't wait to see what you'll think of it!
I seriously can't wait for Caraval to come out and for me to actually get my hands on it. Hopefully it will live up to my expectations!! 😀

Happy New Year to you too and I hope you have a great one as well! 💕
Yes! I swear after I read Six of Crows no other read for the rest of the year could live up to it haha.
Ahhh are you enjoying it so far? I’m really excited to finally get around to that series. And I can’t wait for Caraval too! I hope it lives up to both of our expectations. 😊

So far it’s amazing!! I love the main character (which is always great) and the world and magic system is really interesting. Apparently Victoria Schwan can’t do wrong for me! 😀

I’m glad to hear that and that you’re enjoying it. I’m so excited to finally start that series. I’m waiting until ACOL is released and I’m finished with review books so that I can put all of my focus on them. 😊

Great post for the end of last year Melissa (I keep wanting to say this year despite the fact that 2016 is over now!) I agree with so many of your answers as well.
Six of Crows would be a favourite of mine if I’d read it for the first time last year, as is I went with Crooked Kingdom instead, and I’m sorry that was your pick for a book you expected more from. I guess given you went straight from one into the next you’re expectations may have been a little higher, I dunno. I also loved A Court of Mist and Fury (I think that’s my pick for favourite sequel as well) and The Bone Season, though believe it or not it isn’t the book I recommended to most people this year! 😀
Thanks for the mention, it means a lot to me that you thought of me and my blog for that question.
Also you definitely need to start the Shades of Magic series, I can’t wait for you to read it and to see what you think of it, also I am so so excited for The Song Rising, Once and For All, By Your Side and A Court of Wings and Ruin. There are so many amazing books being released later this year aren’t they?
Great picks for this survey Melissa, also Happy New Year and I hope you have an amazing 2017! 😀 ❤

Thanks so much, Beth! I keep doing the same. I actually wrote and erased ‘this year’ so many times while typing this post up. 😂
Yeah, I think my expectations were so high coming off of how action-packed and fast moving the first book was that I wasn’t expecting there to be slow points. I really did enjoy it though and the duology as a whole is my top favorite. I bet I know your most recommended book! It’s ADSOM, right? 😂
Of course! Your blog is definitely one of my favorites and I’m so glad I met you on here this year.
I plan on it. As soon as I get through all of my review books it’s at the top of my list. I only have review books for this month and then Feb so not long now until I can finally read them. There really are! I’m trying to limit my buying but with all of these new releases and wanting to pre-order them my bank is already sad lol.
Happy New Year to you too and I hope you have an amazing 2017 as well! 😊

It will probably be at least the middle of January before I get the hang of 2016 being last year and 2017 being this year!
Yeah it’s always a shame when sequels don’t really live up to the first book. I know you enjoyed Crooked Kingdom overall but it can still be disappointing expecting something more from a book and then not getting it.
Ha yeah definitely ADSOM! 😀
Your blog is one of my favourites too, and I’m so glad we started talking, I always love seeing comments and posts from you. ❤️
That’s good to hear, I guess review books have to come first given they come with a deadline as well!
I feel like January is going to be an insane month book buying wise for me. I’m going to go way overboard but I can’t wait! 😀
Thanks Melissa! ❤️

Yeah, it can be. With CK it makes me wish there was a third book. Or a novella. Or two epilogues. 😂
I really wish there would have been an epilogue for Jesper and Wylan and then one for Nina. I have a love/hate relationship with open endings lol.
Which reminds me, on the subject of books and wanting more, Tahereh Mafi (Shatter Me author) is supposed to be announcing some things soon. Not sure when soon is exactly but I’m excited because what if it’s about Shatter Me. I remember we were talking about that a while back and it would be funny if it is 😂. Kind of like with Miss Peregrine’s and there being another book releasing now.
I am too! Here’s to many more great conversations throughout 2017. 💕
Yep, gotta keep up with ARC deadlines.
So far, I only have two for this month but that has more to do with still being broke from the holidays. If I wasn’t I would be buying so many. 😂

I’d love to see CK novellas, maybe they can do one for each of the characters seeing as most of them split up after the book. Nina in Ravka, Kaz in Ketterdam, Inej on her ship, Jesper and Wylan running their empire. It’d be interesting to see them after all that happened.
Maybe one day we’ll have another book in the CK kingdom and it will make the open ending make sense, or at least a little more bearable.
Ohh, I hadn’t heard that but I will definitely keep an eye on her Twitter feed/website waiting to see what it is. It would be amazing if there was a sequel for the Shatter Me series, maybe that would mean we do have some weird book-ish power to create sequels.
I have three more ARC reviews drafted and waiting for me to publish them, and another two I need to read and write still, not too bad I think! 😀 I am going to be going on a book buying spree next Friday, very excited about that! 😀 ❤
LikeLiked by 1 person
Yes! A novella for each of them would be so awesome. If that ever happens I would drop everything to read it haha. I really hope there is another book one day. I have a feeling Nina’s the most likely to get something in the future given how things ended. 😊
I know right? If she does announce something for Shatter Me then either it’s a giant coincidence or we do. 😂😂
So far, I’ve only gotten one of my reviews drafted but I’m nearly half finished with my second book of this year so I’d say I’m doing pretty good too.
Ahhhh that’s awesome! I hope you find some fantastic books during your spree. 😊

Same here, I’d just keep wanting more and more from them though. Until eventually I’ll be hoping for more full length novels with them all in. I think there;s a lot to Nina’s story still left untold, hopefully we’ll see her again though.
I’m going to go with the ‘we have superpowers’ version of events! 😀
That is very good, and hopefully you’ll be able to finish your second book pretty quickly and then there’s another one off your list.
Thanks, I hope so too! 😀

I really need to try to balance blogging, reading, and other responsibilities better, too. I tend to put too much time into writing blog posts and not enough into other things. As much as I love blogging (hence why I make it a priority), I need to prioritize some things better!

It was so good! It ends in a torturous cliffhanger though so might be good to wait until Lord of Shadows 😂. Thank you!! I know right? If only they would add it as a feature then I would have went beyond my goal. Re-reads should count since it’s reading lol.

Happy new year!! It seriously amazes me how similar our reading year was! Currently writing a 2016 Recap with similar categories and pretty much the same books. WHY?!? 😩 hahaha just kidding, it’s actually the best thing ever. ❤
SO MANY REREADS this year!! I actually lowered my Goodreads challenge too because I couldn’t make it to my initial number thinking I would read as many books as last year. It would be great it one could include those rereads.
Anyway, here’s to a jam-packed year of blogging!! Can’t wait to read more of your content! 💕

Because we both read the best books, that’s why!! 😂 Seriously though, 2016 was a great year for books even though I didn’t read as many as I had hoped. I swear I have a rereading problem. Once I love a book I almost always reread it and so far this year I’ve already reread two on this list 🙈. It would be awesome if they included a reread feature. It doesn’t make sense that it doesn’t count considering you’re still reading a book. Hopefully one day!
You definitely played a big part. I’m pretty sure you were one of the first bloggers I actually had a conversation with on here. And I’m happy that we did. Also, I’m glad that I could help you feel welcomed in the blogger community too. 💕
Happy New Year to you as well and I hope you have a fantastic 2016! 😊

I really hope someday they do!! Or at least a count of rereads that you click every time you reread it.

Yes! And they could even limit it to one reread per book per year. Anything so that it could count toward reading goals lol.

It really was! The friendship in Six of Crows is probably my favorite out of any fantasy book I’ve read. Crooked Kingdom was actually pretty good. I feel like I make it sound bad in this but it wasn’t 🙈. I just had a tough time with some of the pacing and wished for more lol. Yes! I can’t wait for whatever Caleb Roehrig publishes in the future.
You’re welcome! I’m glad we met on here too and I hope you have a wonderful 2017 as well, Lauren. 💕😊

You re-read so much, Melissa, that’s so amazing! I’m probably the opposite – I barely reread anything last year (can’t believe 2016 is now last year), probably only like 4-5 books? And some of them I kind of skimmed because I’ve read them before and was just re-reading for the sake of it, haha.
And you’re definitely the one who’s convinced me to read The Bone Season! I haven’t yet – I actually haven’t read anything in like, two weeks – but it’s on my TBR for 2017. I hope I like it as much as you have, and even if I don’t… that book is so pretty, it’s totally worth the money. 😂
Thank you for the mention as well! I’m super honoured and I’m really glad to be able to call you a friend as well. Here’s to 2017. 🙏

I have the biggest reread problem (or maybe not so much a problem if only GR counted them) 😂. I’ve found that I reread books quick too, usually in a day, so in between books I have a tendency to dive into a previous read that I’ve missed. This year I’m hoping to do less rereads and more reads of books I own and haven’t picked up yet even though it is fun to reread favorites lol.
I can’t wait to see your thoughts on The Bone Season and I really do hope you end up enjoying it. Though, yeah, if you don’t at least the cover is gorgeous. 😂

Thanks so much for the shoutout Melissa! I’m so happy to have come across your wonderful blog ❤ I LOVE both Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom, but I definitely prefer the first to the second. I was a bit dissatisfied with how the CK ended (or more specifically, how one character's fate was dealt with). ACOMAF and Lady Midnight are also phenomenal books. Glad you gave them honorable mentions 😀 I've really got to get my hands on P.S. I Like You. I don't usually read those types of books, but I think it might be a good break from all the fantasy I read.
I just picked up Splintered, so it'll be a while before I get to RoseBlood, but your review makes me really excited to read it! I love all your character choices, especially anyone from SoC and ACOMAF, and YAS to Ty and Julian. I loved their characters so much. I also really liked Mark! And A Darker Shade of Magic is one of my top priorities, too! I just ordered it and it should get here soon! I can't wait to read it 😀 Awesome post as usual, Melissa ❤

Yeah, I felt the same. Besides the pacing being off at points, for me, I didn’t like how that part of the ending went down. It could have been done so much better. P.S. I Like You is so good! Trust me you won’t regret reading it and it’s definitely perfect for when you need a small break from fantasy. It’s such a cute and funny read. 😊
Are you enjoying Splintered so far? I’m excited to get to that series sometime this year. Especially after having loving RoseBlood, which I hope you end up enjoying once you get to it. They’re all such great characters! Ty was probably my top favorite in Lady Midnight. I can’t wait to see what’s in store for him. I also liked Mark too. But the ending for Lady Midnight!? I’m still dying over it. I hope we both end up enjoying ADSOM. I can’t wait to see your thoughts on it!! Thanks, Azia. 💕

I haven’t gotten around to Splintered just yet. It might be part of my TBR for next month, though! Oops. I thought RoseBlood was part of the Splintered series LOL. Regardless, I’m excited to read both the series and the new release 😀 They sound really promising. And I have a special place in my heart for Ty. And is it just me, or did you see anything possibly happening b/w him and Kit. I thought I saw some chemistry there, or am I crazy? And I love Mark to bits. I kind of hope he still ends up with Kieran, even though Kieran f***** up big time. And I hope so, too! I’ve just got ADOSM in the mail, and I’m really excited to read it this month. Can’t wait to see your thoughts on it, too! ❤

I so thought it was a part of that series at first too and then I figured out they weren’t. I think it’s because a lot of her covers have a similar look/feel to them 😂.
You’re not crazy at all because I can definitely see something happening with him and Kit. I actually think Cassie Clare mentioned something. I already ship them big time. I’ve seen snippets for Lord of Shadows with them and fangirled so much 🙈. I hope he ends up with Kieran too. Although, yeah he really did mess up. I think I have a love/hate feeling when it comes to Kieran.
I’ll be reading them after Feb. 😊

Yes, they do haha XD So confusing! But I guess it’s like her brand. You know it’s A.G. Howard if you see that font and photo style LOL
Oh I hope to the high heavens it becomes canon! I ship them so hard ahaha. And I don’t know what Kieran needs to do to redeem himself, but I hope he does it soon haha. We can always use another M/M relationship in YA Fantasy 😀

I guess it is too. Apparently she does a lot of gothic style retellings. I do know Splintered is a darkish Alice in Wonderland retelling or something. 😊
Me too! And yeah it’s gonna take a lot of Mark to forgive Kieran but I’m rooting for them. I love how much she’s diving into the fairy world in this series. Especially where the wild hunt is concerned. Yes! We really could. 😃

Oooh yay! I love retellings haha, especially Alice in Wonderland themed ones!
I really appreciate the inclusion of the fae, too! I always love reading about Faerie and fairy folklore 😀 I’m excited to see how she’ll expand on that world in the next book! And if Mark and Kieran don’t work out (although I’m hoping to the high heavens they do), at least we have Magnus and Alec, AND possibly Kit and Ty haha 😀

Same here! Anything faerie and I’m sold. That’s true! Both of them all of the other ships. I swear Cassie Clare is the queen of ships because once she puts two characters together I can’t help but ship them. 🙈

This is very true haha. We always have something to look forward to in her books, and that’s the romances 😀 Lord of Shadows can’t come soon enough!

Thank you so much for including me in this post! I’ve loved getting to blog meet you and read all of your posts this year – I hope your 2017 has gotten off to a great start. ❤ RHYS RHYS RHYS. Literally WordPress is going to go into meltdown in May when we all start freaking out over ACOWAR, haha! I've seen so many people mention him and ACOMAF in their 2016 wrap-up posts, which makes me even more excited for the third book. I read my first Maas book this year too, and she's definitely ended up being one of my favourite authors of 2016, too. Happy reading for 2017, Melissa! x

It’s gotten off to a busy start but a good one nonetheless. I hope yours is going good too!
I know right? I can see all of the reviews already. I remember back when I saw a new ACOMAF review posted every day and I imagine it’ll be the same when ACOWAR is released lol. She’s such a great author! I need to tackle her other series this year. Happy reading to you too, Sammie! 😊

Rhys and Feyre are my ultimate OTP, and I’m also grateful for having discovered Sarah J. Maas and Kasie West this year! ACTOAR is definitely the best series I started this year, and as for my favorite fantasy read, I’m quite torn between ACOMAF and Six of Crows! Both were absolutely spectacular. Thank you so much for mentioning me; I hope you have a wonderful 2017, and I’m looking forward to discussing books and staying in touch with you, Melissa!❤

I was actually so torn between choosing Rhys and Feyre and then Inej and Kaz. I was torn on so many things to do with ACOMAF and Six of Crows 😂. They were both definitely top reads for 2016. You’re welcome!! I hope you have a great 2017 as well and look forward to staying in touch with you too. 💕😊
