Update: Reading Slumps and Eye Problems

updatefi.png

I feel like I’ve been really absent on the blogosphere this month. I’ve been around commenting and reading other’s posts every other day but I haven’t exactly been posting regularly.

Mainly because I’ve been in a terrible reading slump. As in I haven’t finished a book since the beginning of the month. Sure, I’ve started books but I’ve had zero motivation to finish them.

But also because I’ve been having eye problems that make it hard to concentrate on the computer screen for too long without getting dizzy and feeling sick. That has a lot to do with the amount of time I spend on work and school since I work online and go to school online. Add that time to the several hours I can spend blogging and sometimes I’m on the computer for nearly 10 – 12 hours a day sometimes. Over the past few weeks I’ve started having a problem where when I’m on for longer than a few hours at a time my vision gets all weird and I start getting dizzy. Thus, why it has been taking me longer to reply to comments and why I haven’t been blog hopping daily. I’m trying to be on the computer less to let my eyes rest.

Hopefully, I can get to the eye doctor soon to figure out a better fix that doesn’t include skipping out on work, school, or blogging because I can’t look at a computer screen for too long.

Also, hopefully my reading slump goes away. I have a few books coming in the mail today that I have been wanting to read really badly. We’ll see!

I just thought I should post a little update. I’m going to try to get back to posting/being on regularly soon. 😊

  1. I hope you start to feel better, Melissa! I wear glasses, so I know how much eye problems can suck. I have a hard time reading and focusing when that happens. Reading slumps are the worst. I hated every book I read for a two week period in April, and it led to a horrible slump that took me months to fully get over. You need Crooked Kingdom! Kaz cures all! 🙂

    • Thank you, Jill! 💕
See, my mom thinks I might need to get reading glasses but my last experience with them was constant migraines. I’ll have to see what the eye doctor ends up saying.
They really are. This is probably the worst slump I’ve had all year. YES! I definitely need Crooked Kingdom and Kaz. I feel like Six of Crows led to my slump because it has been all I’ve thought about since I read it. *counts down the days until the buddy read* 🙈

      • Reading glasses could work. I wear regular glasses, and I know that when they’re new they take some time to get used to, which leads to headaches. And since you’re not wearing them all the time, it could be much harder to adjust to them. I hope it works out. Migraines are the worst I used to get them all the time. 😂 Crooked Kingdom will snap you right out of that slump. 🙂

      • They really are. I used to get them all the time too. The weird thing is when I was younger migraines led my doctor to thinking I needed glasses which in turn made them worse. Yep! But I have a feeling it’ll put me in another slump once I finish it 😂. I’m actually reading Ink and Bone by Lisa Unger right now and loving it. 😊

  2. Melissa you come first!!! I completely understand you though! I have a full time job where I sit in front of the computer all day so when I get home it’s just hard to sit in front of the computer again to blog. I was just talking about this with Lilly (lair of books) yesterday how I want to balance things out but its hard cause again, sitting in front of a pc for 8+ hours is straining (even with glasses, it hurts tons). So I definitely understand you in that aspect of things.

I hope once you feel better with your eyes that your reading slump goes away too. Those suck but sometimes its better to embrace it than fight it.

I am sending you tons of love and health vibes your way xo!

    • I know, I know. I just hate getting so behind on everything blogging wise though. But yes! That’s me too. After spending all day on the computer for work and school it’s definitely hard to blog sometimes. I don’t have glasses at the moment but my mom is thinking that is a big part of my problem and that I might need them. I also want to try to balance things out better. Hopefully we’re both able to figure something out as far as that goes. 😊
I hope so too. I’ve definitely embraced my reading slump time around haha. I’ve got a few books I’m gonna try this week though so we’ll see if one of them can get me out of it.
      Thank you, Gretchen! 💕

  3. Ugh!! Slumps suck and eye problems suck! I definitely understand both. I think you just need glasses, because they’ll ease the strain on your eyes. I used to have the same problem and get to the point where I couldn’t even open them anymore. Well, it won’t disappear completely, because my eyes still hurt from time to time but it’s Nothing I can’t manage. I hope you feel better soon though ❤

  4. Oh no Melissa! I hope you feel better soon, It’s hella straining on our eyes staring at the monitor for hours. I work in an office where I have not 1 but 2 screens to work from 9am to 5pm! LOL it’s also where I do mostly all of my blog hopping from daily. I take a few break here & there but it def impacts how often I actually blog hop because it is straining. I’m set to get my eyes checked this Saturday because I’ve noticed a difference in sight as of lately myself. Give those eyes some rest hun, we will always be here for ya! slumps are the absolute worse! I know that they’re inevitable smh, but I’m never as happy as I am when I’m reading a good book. I hope you crawl your way out of that slump soon…the bookworm in me Is both excited for your book mail & curious HAHA!

    • Thank you, Lilly! 💕
It really is. It seems like there are a lot of us the primarily work on a computer. If only the screens were more eye friendly lol.
I’ve actually started taking more breaks but yeah it still screws with my vision. I hope everything goes well with your eye doctor visit!
Luckily my eyes will be getting a huge rest soon because I plan on taking the first week of next month off of work. Even though I still have school it’ll mean less screen time. 😊
I know right? Slumps are our worst enemies I swear. I’m the same way and slumps always make me a little sad.
I hope so too! I actually got Kiss Cam by Kiara London and Ink and Bone by Lisa Unger. One of them both you a Jill kind of recommended to me via your reviews lol and then the other I read the first 15 chapters for through this free promo type thing and fell in love with it. Hopefully they both pull me out of my slump. 😃

      • Thanks Melissa! a week off of work sounds heavenly right about now, I hope you enjoy your time off. I’ve actually heard of Kiss Cam & you’ve practically probably already read half the book if you read 15 chapters LOL! it must be really good so I hope it gets you right out of that slump. Ink and Bone is perfect for this time of year and a real page turner so I hope you enjoy it as much as we did. I look forward to reading your thoughts 🙂

      • I checked when I got it in the mail and it so was half of the book. I’m putting distance from it for a while since I know I’ll want to skip half of it but I can’t if I want to review it and tab/note take. What I did read was fantastic though and I highly recommend it if you’re ever in need of an extremely cute romance lol. Ink and Bone is so good so far! I made the mistake of reading it in the dark though and I kept getting freaked out 😂.

  5. I hope it all works out for you! I suffer constant vertigo and vision problems due to chronic illness and they can really hender blogging and reading abilities. I finally gave in to audiobooks at times.

Everyone here completely understands. Sometimes it is just time for a break! It sounds like you need to focus on you. That is what matters most at the end of the day.

    Chin up ❤

  6. I’m sorry to hear about your eye problems Melissa, and your reading slump as well (though I think we may have spoke about this before a little).
I hope you manage to get to the doctor soon about it. I work with computers a lot of the time, seven and a half hours at work and then a few more hours blogging. It takes a toll, I’ll admit but hopefully it’s something that can be easily fixed, maybe the rest will help too.
Maybe while resting your eyes a little you’ll get over your slump too! 😀

    • Thank you, Beth! 💕
Yep we spoke about it. I thought I had finally gotten out of and then over a week later and I still haven’t finished that book. 🙈
I hope so too. And yes. I wish computer screens were less harsh on eyes. Especially for those of us who do work on them a lot.
I’m hoping so. I have a few books I’ve been wanting to read that I hope don’t fall prey to my reading slump lol. 😊

      • That’s all right! ❤
Oh that's a shame, especially when you think you're out of a slump and it turns out the book just isn't interesting enough for you. It's taken me a long time to read certain books, not because they weren't amazing but just because of other things going on in my life.
I turn down the brightness on my work computer, that does help a little just because it puts less strain on my eyes.
Maybe one of them will be the book that pulls you out of your slump as well, and when it comes down to it there's no feeling like being interested and invested in a book again after a reading slump! 😀

      • It definitely is. That’s the situation I’m in with The Shining at this point. I’ve been 40 pages in for a few weeks and it’s not that I don’t like it it’s just that I’m busy and other things are interesting me more.
I’ve been trying to do that with mine but sometimes I forget lol.
I actually just started this one book Ink and Bone by Lisa Unger last night and so far I’m reading it and haven’t put it down so hopefully I end up finishing it. It’s really good and the perfect Halloween book. Yes! When a book gets you out of a slump it is always the best. 😊

      • Yeah, there’s nothing wrong with that, it’s just when you have the time and energy to read. Yesterday for example I was a little ill and so tired I slept on the train to and from work and when I got home again pretty much crashed for the whole evening. Didn’t get any reading done and I was planning to start Blood for Blood.
Yeah sometimes I do, but when I remember it does help. I’m actually going to have to turn it down on my laptop now if my headache keeps up. :/
Then hopefully Ink and Bone will pull you out of your slump. I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you Melissa! 😀

  7. I’m really sorry to hear about your eye problems and I hope that you are feeling better now! (Or will feel better, when you visit the doctor.) ❤
I completely understand you with the reading slump. I haven't really read anything this month either. I basically only read one book and one short story. XD I just really didn't feel like reading any books all month, so I basically didn't. Instead I re-watched a lot of Criminal Minds. (Not regretting that one bit!)

    • Thank you! Resting them for a few days definitely helped out. Although I’ll, hopefully, be making a trip to the eye doctor next month to figure out if I do need reading glasses. 😊
That’s pretty much what I did but instead of Criminal Minds it was back to back movie marathons. I’ve practically made my way through almost all of Amazon Prime and Netflix’s horror movie sections at this point 😂.

  8. I’ve been in a reading slump too! I normally read 10 books each month but this month I only managed to finish 4 😦 I kept getting distracted by other things :’) and ohhh having eye problem is no fun! I had a slight problem with my eyes so I have glasses but only wear them ocassionally, like when I have to sit in the back of a class or so. One time I left my glasses at home when I was away on campus and it was a really uncomfortable week for me! It was difficult to keep up with classes, like I literally had to sit in the front seat and I couldn’t stare at my laptop screen for too long. Have you been to the doctor? Get glasses? Wear contacts? But the easiest thing is to let your eyes rest for a few days 😀

    • 10 books!? I usually only finish 4 or 5. I’m jealous that you usually finish 10. I’m a terribly slow reader though 😂. I hope your slump lets up soon!
I actually let my eyes rest for a few days and it’s been good so far. I’m pretty sure I’ll have to take a trip to the eye doctor soon to get reading glasses though, hopefully next month. 😊
