“There was a corpse in my neighbor’s front yard.”

Last Seen Leaving had me riveted from the very first line to the very last. It was gripping and full of twists that not only had me gasping out loud at times but had me second guessing everything I was thinking at every possible turn. I was on the edge of my seat! I kept trying to come up with theories about who did what, what would happen, and what had happened – I was wrong every single time (and I enjoyed that aspect). As far as my first experience with the mystery/thriller genre (when it comes to books) is concerned I would say that this was a raving success. I thoroughly enjoyed it, it was unforgettable, and probably one of the best books I’ve read this year!

“January McConville is missing, son. She never came home from school on Tuesday night, and no one’s seen or heard from her since.”

This book, as stated in the synopsis, is about Flynn’s girlfriend January having vanished and the mystery surrounding her disappearance. It’s a mystery that Flynn is desperate to solve and the reader is whisked away on this dark and twisted journey with him. As he begins to uncover secrets that January kept hidden he is forced to face his own secret alongside those revelations. Last Seen Leaving is Flynn’s own personal journey as well – his journey of acknowledging who he really is and learning to accept and embrace it. In a nutshell, while the reader is gripped in the claws of this haunting tale they also get to see the transformation Flynn goes through in terms of his sexuality (which is made pretty obvious straight away). That journey of self-discovery brings with it an unexpected romance that I won’t go into detail about but it was incredible and I loved it.

“I sure as hell couldn’t tell Wilkerson and Moses about all of that, not in front of my mother. Well, we had this huge fight, because she wanted to have sex and I didn’t, because … because … A trill of fear spiked through me, my head whirling and my stomach turning over just at the thought of it,”

Caleb Roehrig wove so many different layers and stories into this book and it was enchanting and incredibly well done. Combine that with his writing that was practically spellbinding and you have a book that is impossible to put down.

I feel like this was equal parts character driven and plot driven. There is a cast of very colorful characters in this book – some are horrible and you’ll hate them and some you’ll adore or end up adoring. I won’t go into detail about the characters because to do so would spoil everything.

I will say that I, obviously, adored Flynn and his journey. He was a funny, sarcastic, and charming character who, despite everything, is probably the person who cared for January the most and would do anything if it meant she was found and safe.

January was so complex and at times I wasn’t sure how I felt about her but ultimately I ended up respecting her more than any of the other characters.

And don’t even get me started on Kaz! I won’t give away anything but he was my favorite and I loved him.

This is one of those times where I will be as vague as possible in a review because I went into this book blind and I believe it’s better if you do that. I wouldn’t have had such a strong reaction nor would I have been as riveted if I would have known any specifics that were not already common knowledge beforehand.

However, I do want to point out that this book is a dark book. It does have light moments but at its core, Last Seen Leaving has a very realistic and scary vibe to it. The topic of rape is broached, there is violence, gruesome scenes, and a lot of bad things happen. The reason I’m pointing that out is because I know there are people that might not want to be blindsided by certain things in a book.

That aside, Last Seen Leaving will sink its claws into you and not let go until you turn the final page. There are so many twists that leave you guessing and a shocker of an ending that will have you picking your jaw up off the floor.

Another auto-buy author for me as I definitely can’t wait to see what Caleb Roehrig has in store for us with his future books.

  1. Yes!! I had all the same thoughts you did whilst reading this. I was so impressed by it. I can normally work out thrillers straight away, but this one kept me guessing the whole time! I loved January and the relationship between Flynn and Kaz. The ending was so great too. I’ll definitely be reading more of Caleb Roehrig’s books in the future.

    • I was too! I’m the same way with books. This was my first mystery/thriller read but with books in general I can usually work out what’s going on through the foreshadowing. This one completely threw me for a loop though! I don’t think I’ve ever been that surprised by a book. It makes me wish I could read it for the first time all over again because it was a neat experience.

I ended up loving January too and Flynn and Kaz were the best. ♥

And the ending! Yes! It was such an unexpected ending. During the first part of the book I actually thought ‘What if?’ but then so much happened so I dismissed the idea. It was so well done.

I will be too and I can’t wait to see your review for this whenever you do post it. 😊

  2. I am so looking forward to this book. I’ve been dying to read some thrillers lately and I’ve read surprisingly few YA thrillers. This one looks great and I’ve seen quite a few positive reviews for it. Great review! 🙂

  3. This is a great review Melissa, and this book sounds amazing as well! I will definitely be picking it up when it’s released. Also if the first quote you posted with your review is the first line of this book then I can see why you were hooked, I already am and I don’t even have the book myself!
I haven’t read many thrillers but I’ve slowly been adding them to my to-read list because they all sound amazing and some have brilliant reviews to go along with them. This seems like a book I’ll really love, just like you did! 🙂

    • Awww thank you, Beth!! 😊

Yep! The first quote is the first line in the book. I read that and from there I was completely hooked. It was a great way to start the book!

This one is probably the only actual thriller that I’ve read, but I’ve been doing the same! I’ve read so many great reviews over thrillers that have been released this year so I’ve added a ton to my TBR. After having read this I want to dive into another one so badly! I didn’t think I would enjoy the suspense but it was perfect.

I hope you do end up loving it and I can’t wait to see what you end up thinking of it! ♥

      • In that case yeah I can see why it had you hooked because it pretty much has me hooked as well! I love books that grab your attention like that from page one.
At the moment I’ve only read one thriller as well but I have plenty more on my to-read list and all with amazing reviews so it’s just a matter of getting around to them! Oh the suspense part is one of my favourite parts, and I knew that even before. I love trying to guess how it will all end, it’s part of the fun for me!
I hope so too, I’ll be posting a review once I’ve finished this one so you’ll be able to see what I think of it! ❤️

      • So do I! Most of the time I know I’ll love a book when it pulls me in from the very first line.

I love trying to guess how it will end too! That was one of my favorite parts of this because I guessed so many times and ended up not being right but it was fun either way.

I’ll be on the look out for it! 😊♥

      • If the opening for a book is good the you know the rest of the story is going to be amazing as well.
See I love it when no matter what you guess you don’t get it right. It seems more like an actual twist that way and then you can go back and maybe pick up on things you missed the first time around. 🙂

    • You should so read it! If you have an ARC or whenever it’s released, either way IT’S SO GOOD. And given that Autumn/Halloween is right around the corner this is the perfect read and is released at a time when most want a great thriller.

I can’t wait to see what you end up thinking of it when you do read/review it! ♥😊

  5. Awesome review! I’ve seen this one floating about on Goodreads a lot recently. I’m always really cautious when it comes to dark/mystery books, because it’s a genre I love so much and I have a tendency to be really easily disappointed! This sounds really good though and I like that it is both character and plot driven, because that can be really hard to achieve in these sorts of novels! Defo popping it on my TBR. 🙂 x

  6. Oohh I’ve been waiting on this one until closer to pub date but now I really want to read it, great review! Maybe we’ll pull you over to the dark side with some thrillers now 😜 It’s such a tricky genre, they’re usually either really great with lots of unexpected twists and turns, like this one! Or it’s super easy to figure out what’s going on and you get annoyed.
