My crazy book haul for August and a conversation about book buying that I had with Beth @ Reading Every Night got me thinking about things I’ve learned from book buying. So, I decided to make this little post that is supposed to be half comedic and half serious. Enjoy! 🙈😂
- If there’s anything I’ve learned it’s how to get great discounts. Books are not cheap and more often than not buying them online or in a used bookstore can cut the price – not to mention everyday deals or discounts the website/bookstore might have going on. (One time I bought over a $100 in books for less than $50!)
- Just because you run out of space for books doesn’t mean you stop buying them. You just keep buying them until they are in piles in your room and tumbling out your door. (This is bound to happen when you don’t have room for another shelf, aka my predicament.)
- I have no self-control. I don’t know what self-control is. What is it and where can I purchase it? Book buying is an addiction! There are months when I buy two or three books max, but then there are months when I decide to buy out my local used bookstore or even Amazon. I’ve learned that I need to learn to pace myself because my bank account is weeping guys, weeping.
- Book buying bans never work out for me. I can’t quit book buying cold turkey. So the most obvious solution is to only buy a few books I know I’ll read soon. That’s a new thing I’m implementing for myself from now on because of the above problem. (This does not include pre-orders because there are always those books you want asap when they’re released.)
- Last but not least, I don’t have to buy a book every time I visit the bookstore. I’ve spent countless hours in a bookstore and walked out with nothing so many times. In those moments it was enough to just browse the books and be in the bookstore, I had a fun time even though I ended up buying nothing. (Maybe I do have self-control sometimes.)

Great post Melissa, I’m so glad our conversation made you think of this because I loved reading it.
I’m never going to stop buying books, even if I do run out of space I’ll still buying, after all there will always be somewhere I can keep my new books! I will admit I don’t always buy books whenever I go into a bookstore, sometimes I just enjoy browsing all the books that are there.
Also book buying bans where you go completely cold turkey never work for me; all I can do is limit what I buy and hope I can manage my money a little while before I go insane again! 😀

Same! Browsing books in a bookstore can be really calming, it’s enjoyable. Though it is hard to walk out without buying something most of the time. And I’m with you on book buying bans!

Exactly, there’s just something about being surrounded by books that I love, granted more time than not I do end up buying something as well! 😀

Yes! Books everywhere. That’s one of the things I remember the most about that book, how their house was filled with books. It’s such a great book! It’s probably one of the ones that got me into fantasy. It also made me wish I could read people out of books. Younger me thought that was the coolest thing lol. 🙈

Ohh, that sounds like my dream house then, and maybe I should check out the book as well then! If it’s one that got you into fantasy it may be worth reading.

True, it would still be pretty awesome! I think it depends on the character. There are some characters I’d love to read out a book and some that would probably cause the world to end and I wouldn’t want to do that. 😂

Well, no, no bringing forth world ending characters but as for the rest it would be amazing to get the opportunity to meet them in real life wouldn’t it! 🙂

Great post! Beth is awesome! I was talking to her about my addiction yesterday. So true what you said. I’ve been on a buying spree. Then I take them back, thinking oh I shouldn’t have bought so many just because they were bargains, and then I buy more. Plus Kindle. Don’t you just love going into the bookstore though? I love the smell and if they serve coffee I never want to leave. 🙂

I have been too. I feel like a lot of us went book buying crazy in August. I’ve never taken any back though I usually just wallow in my guilt over buying so many and then repeat the cycle all over again 😂. Yes! Kindle and Amazon Prime have made my book buying worse. I’ve spent more on books since I got one than I did before.
Yes! I swear I need to buy a bookstore candle just so I can have that scent whenever. I’m with you on coffee. I could probably stay in a bookstore forever. 🙈

I know right!? Though I feel like sometimes even then I still go overboard and end up spending too much because I’m able to get more books for less lol. Yes! Amazon and Half Price Books are my go too for buying books. 😃

Oh my gosh…I love, love, love this post. You are absolutely right on all points! I have found that some online book discount stores make up for low prices with high shipping, so I have to make sure I am buying plenty of books to justify how the vendor drops its overall shipping price(s). I have found that the first few books have the highest shipping costs; after that its $0.50 to $1.00 per book. So, I save up a budget for once or twice a year and then I get to go “Book Buying Bonkers!” Wheeeeeee! 🙂

I’ve noticed that about some online book discount stores as well. I used half ebay way back when but realized I was basically paying the same I would elsewhere because of shipping. I’ve used thriftbooks before and they’re pretty good. Along with Book Depository, they have free shipping and a lot of great deals. 😊
